Barrett is in danger of academic probation, which would force him out of the school play just before opening night. While he struggles to study for Katrina’s science test around long rehearsals, an anonymous email offers him the answers for twenty dollars. He initially deletes it, but after rehearsal consumes his planned study time, he retrieves the message, places money in locker 289, and uses the stolen answers to earn a perfect grade.
Guilt spoils Barrett’s relief. Without admitting what he has done, he tells Whit that an unknown person is running a harmful scheme and says he wants to identify the culprit and persuade that person to stop. Emily eagerly joins the investigation. School records show that no one is assigned to locker 289, and a broken key prevents the janitor from opening it.
Emily discovers that the back of the locker opens through a hole concealed in the theater’s prop closet. Since Miss Adelaide and Barrett hold the only official keys, suspicion briefly turns toward him. Katrina confirms that Barrett returned to school on the payment night, though he claims that he came for a forgotten book. Rather than confess, Barrett repeatedly emphasizes that someone else might also have entered.
The photograph of the stolen test contains the name of the copier in the school office. Barrett and Olivia find a motion-activated camera and a school laptop hidden above the copier’s ceiling tile. Emily separately learns that key blanks are missing and someone has used the metal shop’s machine to copy keys, explaining access to the office, school, and prop closet.
The laptop contains a list of students who purchased answers. As Emily examines it, Barrett secretly erases his own name. Olivia sees him do it, but he lies to her face. Katrina then praises Barrett’s integrity for uncovering the scheme, and the undeserved approval becomes more than he can bear.
Barrett confesses that he bought the science answers, cheated, lied throughout the investigation, and deleted evidence. He had hoped that stopping the seller would make him feel better without requiring him to admit his own guilt. Katrina must fail him on the test, which puts him on probation and removes him from the play, but she appreciates his honest confession.
Emily uses the original email to lure the seller with a message claiming that his camera has been found. Jay arrives, accidentally identifies himself as the scammer, and attempts to expose Barrett so he can inherit the leading role as understudy. Katrina reveals that Barrett has already confessed and that the laptop proves Jay sold answers for several subjects. Jay is suspended, leaving the production without either actor.
The cast postpones the play until spring because they still want Barrett as their Mortimer, provided that he works his way off probation. Barrett accepts the consequences and promises Olivia that he will study hard and make amends. Olivia reminds him of repentance’s final step: after confessing, turning away, and seeking forgiveness, he must also accept the forgiveness offered to him.
