Eva and Lucia surrender their lamb rather than risk a violent confrontation with Phineas. They report his conduct to Eli, only to learn that Phineas and his equally corrupt brother, Hophni, are Eli’s sons. Eli rebukes Phineas and warns that God will end their family’s priesthood if the brothers refuse to change. Phineas dismisses the warning, and Eli sadly claims that he is too old to do more than talk to them.
The Imagination Station separates Camilla from her mother and grandmother and places her among the tabernacle servants. There she meets Samuel, now a boy near her own age. Hannah visits only once each year and brings him a new robe, but Samuel trusts that God has a purpose for his service. He also reveals that Hannah now has three more sons and two daughters.
That night, Samuel repeatedly hears someone call his name and goes to Eli, who insists that he has not called. After the third time, Eli realizes that God may be speaking. He tells Samuel to answer, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Camilla is nearby when the voice comes again. God tells Samuel that He will judge Eli’s family because Eli knew his sons were dishonoring God and failed to stop them.
Samuel dreads delivering such painful news, but he truthfully repeats the entire message when Eli asks. Eli accepts that God will do what is right and admits his failure. Samuel explains to Camilla that God has spoken to him in other ways too: through the sacred writings, his mother’s teaching, and the inward prompting that reminds him of right and wrong. God has something to say to young and old alike, but they must learn to listen and also speak to Him.
The Philistines defeat Israel in battle, killing four thousand soldiers. Hophni and Phineas take the Ark of the Covenant into a second battle, treating it as if possession of a holy object will force God to give them victory. Samuel warns that people do not get to choose their own miracles. The next messenger brings devastating news: the army has been crushed, both corrupt priests are dead, and the Philistines have captured the Ark.
The shock of the Ark’s capture causes Eli to fall backward, break his neck, and die. Samuel grieves for the man who has been like a father to him, while the people begin looking to the boy as God’s prophet. Samuel does not pretend to have an answer ready. He will wait for God to speak in His own time and obey when He does.
Back at Whit’s End, Eva tells Camilla that Samuel grows into a great leader of Israel and later appoints its first kings. Camilla now recognizes that God has been speaking through Scripture, church, her family, and the story she has just lived. Remembering that Jesus gave Himself as the sacrifice for sin, she decides to stop ignoring God and give her life to Him. Holding hands with Eva and Lucia, Camilla asks God to forgive her, change her, and make her the person He wants her to be.
