As Jeff continues his account, Connie has another painful day trying to change June’s house. The thought of replacing a light fixture June chose sends her crying behind a flooring display. Jeff, who lost his own father to cancer in college, assures her that grief cannot be hurried. She must pass through difficult days while also receiving the comfort God gives.
In Venezuela, Lily sends Jeff outside to comfort Alberto while she treats Maya. Unable to explain in the boy’s language what is happening, Jeff holds him and prays. His own loss helps him offer the comfort he once received. While praying, Jeff remembers that Maya mentioned having medicine when she first came to the clinic.
Francesca confirms that a traveling jungle healer gave Maya medicine for back pain. He may distribute dangerous or counterfeit drugs, but no one can find the pills. Because his home is two days away on foot and Maya has little time, Jeff flies Lily and Francesca farther into the jungle. He glides the plane onto a short field that ends at a cliff, stopping just before the edge.
The healer is away, but his hut contains an enormous collection of black-market medicines, including failed or unsafe drugs. Lily photographs the labels, though she cannot tell which one Maya took. After promising to return and help the villagers there, the team flies back without the answer it needs.
Another search of Maya’s tiny home finds nothing. Then Alberto proudly shows Jeff the musical instruments he and his friends have made. When the boy mentions medicine and opens his maraca, Jeff discovers that its rattling pieces are not stones but Maya’s discarded pills. Lily recognizes the drug as one rejected before approval because it is extremely dangerous. A call over the satellite telephone reveals that a common antibiotic already in the clinic can counteract it. Maya receives the treatment and is expected to recover, while the poisoned babies also improve after the dangerous flowers are removed.
Jeff had promised a love story, but his new love is not Maya or Francesca. While preparing to leave, he realizes that flying, helping people, accepting risk, and serving God have joined into a purpose that makes him feel fully alive. He asks when the medical team will return. The commercial career he planned no longer seems enough, and he begins flying mission trips whenever funding and time allow.
Connie sees a way to help. She can create documentaries about Jeff’s work and other service organizations, Eugene can build a website connecting needs with helpers, and Whit can seek support through the Universal Press Foundation. Her grief remains, but she wants to pass along the comfort she has received instead of looking only inward. Jeff’s return to faith has changed their old relationship: the young man she once encouraged spiritually is now encouraging her.
