Camilla Parker has lost interest in church, family devotions, and personal Bible reading. She would rather spend Wednesday night at a friend’s house and argues that a month with five Wednesdays gives her one church service to skip. Eva worries because Camilla once eagerly studied the Bible, but she also knows that Camilla must choose a relationship with God for herself. Lucia suggests that perhaps her granddaughter has not learned to recognize God’s voice.
Eva arranges an Imagination Station journey for herself, Camilla, and Lucia. They arrive in ancient Israel at the home of Elkanah during a yearly Passover feast. His second wife, Hannah, has no children and suffers cruel insults from Peninnah, the mother of Elkanah’s children. Elkanah loves Hannah and assures her of her worth, but she cannot escape the grief of years spent praying for a child.
At the tabernacle in Shiloh, the visitors watch Hannah pour out her sorrow to God. She promises that if He gives her a son, she will dedicate the boy to God’s service for his entire life. Because she prays silently and only her lips move, the chief priest Eli initially mistakes her anguish for drunkenness. Once he understands, he blesses her and asks God to grant her request.
The Imagination Station carries the three women forward to the birth of Hannah’s son. Eva, a nurse, helps deliver the baby, and Hannah names him Samuel because God has heard her. She tells Camilla that God is not obligated to give people whatever they ask; prayer expresses dependence, opens the heart to Him, and allows Him to speak in return. Hannah intends to keep her promise by bringing Samuel to serve at the tabernacle once he is old enough.
Camilla questions how Hannah can trust God after waiting so long and how she can surrender her little son. Hannah says that she is giving Samuel back to the God who gave him, then urges Camilla to listen and obey. Camilla insists that God has never spoken to her, but Hannah wonders whether Camilla has failed to hear.
Eva and Lucia arrive at the tabernacle at a later time and purchase a lamb for sacrifice. A priest named Phineas demands the meat for his own dinner before it can be offered according to God’s commands. When Eva protests that he is abusing his position, Phineas angrily invokes his authority and threatens to take the lamb by force.
