The Old Judge warns that even a chosen king must struggle for his crown and guard against his own weaknesses. Darien decides to visit his family before seeking help abroad. The Judge sends Anna with Darien and Kyle as far as the convent at Dor, where Sister Leona can train her gift and give her something important.
Anna grieves to leave the cottage that has begun to feel like home. The Old Judge cannot promise they will meet again and warns that her journey will include suffering, but that suffering may reveal the Unseen One's ways more clearly. The three travelers reach Dor shortly before dawn.
Sister Leona has one blue eye and one green eye like the Old Judge. She agrees to teach Anna while Darien and Kyle continue. She also gives Darien the golden sword of Commander Sorin, the Palatian warrior Darien defeated with his small knife. Darien accepts it as a loan and hopes to return it.
Kyle and Anna share an anxious farewell. Soon after Darien and Kyle leave the convent, Kyle senses danger around a passing shepherd. The man appears to continue on his way, but Anna dreams that he runs back to Dor after they pass. Her vision then turns into a terrifying attack in which a swordsman enters her room and kills her.
Darien and Kyle reach his family's ranch. His parents report that the king's men have searched and damaged their home. Darien asks them to seek sanctuary in Gothard, but he will not join them because Prince Edwin might shelter a trading family without openly opposing Lawrence, while sheltering Darien could threaten international agreements.
As Darien and Kyle leave the hidden family cabin, armed men surround them. They prove to be Colonel Oliver and loyal soldiers who have come voluntarily after receiving a message from the Old Judge. Darien has lost the king's protection but not the devotion of those who have served beside him.
At the convent, Anna awakens with a fever. Sister Leona explains that a voice may share the suffering of others through dreams and must strengthen faith through prayer, study, silence, and solitude. She gives Anna a hand mirror before leaving to answer a summons from King Lawrence.
Anna discovers that the conversation itself was another vision: Leona has already been gone for hours. Yet the mirror remains, and Anna's eyes have changed from brown to blue and green. The sign confirms that she is one of the chosen.
Through another dream, Anna watches Lawrence question Leona. The shepherd, Oram, reports that the sister gave Darien Sorin's sword and supplies. Lawrence concludes that believers in the Unseen One will all support Darien and orders everyone in the convent killed.
Even Liddell warns that royal soldiers attacking the sisters could turn the nation against Lawrence. He therefore offers the convent's land to Oram if the shepherd and his men carry out the massacre themselves. Oram accepts, and the attack Anna dreamed about is set for that very night.
