On a cold, rainy day in Odyssey, Jack Allen brings Whit an old handwritten school notebook found in Maude McCutcheon's attic. Its title is The Chronicle of the Chosen, and it is dated October 3, 1958. Intrigued by Jack's mysterious interest, Whit begins reading the manuscript that evening.
In the account, siblings Kyle and Anna are spending summer with their grandparents in Odyssey. Following a map from Uncle Bill, they search the woods for an abandoned house once supposedly used by a pirate. Kyle loves the adventure, while Anna fears the ruined floors, broken windows, and ghost stories.
Inside a tower room, Kyle hears voices that Anna cannot hear. Through a keyhole, he sees a richly furnished room and two men fighting with swords, even though Anna sees only emptiness. The floor collapses beneath Kyle. When Anna tries to escape, a previously locked door opens and a flash of white light engulfs her.
Kyle lands behind a curtain in the room he saw. A young officer has defeated an older enemy general and demands the man's medals. When the defeated officer attacks from behind, Kyle warns the young man in time. The officer is forced to kill his attacker, then takes Kyle through a window and along a ledge to escape approaching guards.
Anna appears inside a closet in an ornate palace room. She overhears King Lawrence arguing with his son, Prince George. The king is jealous of General Darien, a celebrated soldier whose victories and popularity make Lawrence fear that the people will replace him.
Darien has agreed to win the medals of one hundred enemy officers before marrying Lawrence's daughter Michelle. Prince George trusts his friend and insists that Darien is loyal, but the king believes a peasant must prove himself before joining the royal family. News arrives that Darien has completed his mission and is returning by train.
After George leaves to arrange a celebration, Lawrence tells General Liddell to get rid of Darien. Anna tries to slip out, but Liddell catches her. She explains the ruined house, the bright light, and her missing brother, yet the king calls her a spy. Rather than execute her, he sends her to a man named Titus.
Titus is a slave dealer. He locks Anna up overnight, ties her wrists the next morning, and drags her into the marketplace. No one responds to her cries that she is not a slave. As Titus prepares to sell her to the highest bidder, Anna is trapped in a strange world with no idea where Kyle has gone.
