Darien and Liddell take nearly a thousand troops toward Crawley in the Territory of Peace. The Adrian raiders have already withdrawn into the hills, where Maris's cannons drive them farther away. Liddell then orders Darien and a small group to search a northern area that seems unlikely to contain anyone.
At a stream, Kyle feels the same sudden sickness that warned him before the attack in the enemy palace. He spots light flashing from a rifle above them and knocks Darien down before a sniper fires. Darien's men kill the attacker and discover that he is a Marushan soldier, not an Adrian.
Liddell promises a full investigation, but Darien and Colonel Oliver do not trust him. Kyle has now saved Darien's life twice, and his unexplained warnings suggest that his arrival in Maris has a purpose beyond chance.
While Kyle returns to Sarum, Anna learns about the Unseen One. The Old Judge explains that the Unseen One is the Creator - God - and that the Sacred Scrolls record His relationship with creation. Faithful people may also be chosen for particular tasks revealed through prayer, the Scrolls, or a prophet.
The Old Judge once established Lawrence as king, but Lawrence has rejected the Unseen One and clings to power that no longer belongs to him. Darien has been chosen to replace him. Lawrence knows this, and his fear is turning into madness.
Anna begins having visions. The Old Judge tells her in dreams that she has been brought to Maris as a voice and protector but must trust the Unseen One. While awake, she sees Liddell report the failed assassination and Lawrence rage against the God who gave him the crown. Afraid she will sound foolish, Anna keeps the visions secret.
Preparations for Darien's arranged marriage to Michelle delay Kyle's visit to the Old Judge. Darien admits that he barely knows the princess and hopes respect may eventually grow into love. At a royal banquet on the eve of the wedding, Lawrence gives Michelle her mother's jewelry and presents Darien with an antique crossbow.
Lawrence loads the weapon, complains bitterly that the people praise Darien instead of their king, and refuses requests to put it down. Kyle's warning sickness returns. He flicks a brass uniform button across the room, causing Darien to bend just before the crossbow fires. The bolt passes inches above him and buries itself in the piano.
Lawrence calls the shooting an accident, but George, Kyle, Darien, and Oliver recognize the danger. Darien finally orders Oliver to prepare for travel. His loyalty to the crown remains strong, yet staying within the king's reach may cost him his life.
