Passages: Darien's Rise

The king wants Darien dead, and soldiers are already on their way to arrest him for treason. Princess Michelle races ahead of the guards to warn him - and to confess that she loves him - while a suit of armor tucked into his bed buys time for his escape out the window. Darien and young Kyle flee to the Old Judge's cottage, where Kyle is joyfully reunited with his sister Anna and the children finally learn why they were brought to this world: Anna is a voice who sees what the Unseen One shows her, and Kyle is Darien's protector. But the king comes hunting, and the Old Judge's strange power sends the royal guards into helpless laughter, drives the king to beg for mercy, and leaves him with a warning that his disobedience has cost him the right to rule. Even so, Darien refuses to raise a hand against him... and with Kyle at his side, he prepares to leave his homeland for good.

The story

Read the full synopsis 2 min

In the Old Judge's cottage, Anna sees another room reflected in her mirror instead of her own face. King Lawrence orders Liddell to arrest Darien for treason. After Liddell leaves, a hidden panel opens and Princess Michelle slips from the king's room, having overheard the plan.

Michelle reaches Darien's castle before the royal guards. She explains that they will claim the Marushan sniper at Crawley discovered Darien's plot and was killed to silence him. The soldiers under Darien's command will not be accepted as trustworthy witnesses. Michelle also confesses that she has loved Darien since they met, even though the arranged marriage began as her father's way of watching him.

Darien puts a suit of armor beneath his bedcovers to delay the search. Michelle agrees to claim that he threatened her and fled toward the unused east wing, while Darien and Kyle escape through another window. Michelle parts from him by calling him her king.

Darien and Kyle reach the Old Judge's cottage, where Kyle and Anna are joyfully reunited. As the siblings compare their adventures, each withholds the strangest parts: Anna says nothing of her visions, and Kyle says nothing of his three warnings that saved Darien.

Newspapers report that a treasonous plot has been stopped and the royal family moved for safety. When Anna identifies Michelle from a photograph and describes the armor in Darien's bed, the truth comes out. The Old Judge declares Anna a voice who can see what the Unseen One shows her, while Kyle is a protector who senses danger to Darien.

The children have been brought to help Darien become king. Darien still refuses to raise a hand against Lawrence, and the Old Judge tells him to leave the king's removal to the Unseen One. The Judge predicts that Lawrence will soon come searching because the royal family has moved to Balmovia, an estate only two miles away.

Darien and Kyle secretly approach Balmovia so Darien can speak with Prince George. The prince confirms that Lawrence deliberately tried to kill Darien and urges him to seek refuge in Gothard. The two friends pledge loyalty to each other despite everything the king may do.

Meanwhile, Lawrence arrives at the Old Judge's cottage with Liddell and soldiers. The Judge's mysterious power sends the guards into helpless laughter and drives Lawrence to beg for mercy. He then confronts the king for abandoning the Unseen One and warns that his disobedience has cost him the right to rule.

Liddell takes the shaken king away, while the Old Judge tells Anna he has a mission for her. At Balmovia, George warns Darien that arrest and death may amount to the same thing. Darien accepts that Lawrence will not be reasoned with and prepares to leave his homeland, trusting Kyle to remain beside him.
