Passages: Darien's Rise

Kyle Falken is being hailed as a hero - the young officer he saved turns out to be General Darien, the most beloved soldier in all of Maris. Aboard a train to the capital, Kyle learns of the strange world he's fallen into: two moons hang in the sky, and Darien once felled the enemy commander Sorin with nothing but a whittling knife. Meanwhile, a mysterious Old Judge frees Anna from the slave trader Titus with a wave of sleep, then shelters her in a cottage where hours pass in minutes and cold tea turns hot again. In Sarum, Darien wins the hand of Princess Michelle, but Prince George whispers a warning... the Old Judge has named Darien the true chosen king, and jealous King Lawrence knows it. Darien swears he will never betray his king. Then word comes of raiders in the Territory of Peace, and Kyle rides off to war at the general's side - straight into dangers neither of them can see.

The story

Read the full synopsis 2 min

The young officer is General Darien. He brings Kyle to his waiting soldiers and a steam train bound for Sarum, the capital of Maris. Darien publicly credits Kyle with saving his life, so the regiment treats the boy like a hero. Colonel Oliver remains suspicious and warns that he will discover whether Kyle is secretly working for Maris's enemies, the Palatians.

The sight of two moons convinces Kyle that he is far from home. He tells Darien how he fell through an abandoned house in Odyssey. Darien has never heard of such a place, but he believes Kyle is sincere and promises to consult the wise Old Judge. Until then, Kyle will remain his honored guest under the care of the Unseen One.

A dining-car attendant explains Darien's history. Darien was a farm boy when the Palatian commander Sorin cornered Maris's army. Furious that King Lawrence considered surrender, Darien challenged Sorin and killed him with a small whittling knife. The surprised army rallied, and Darien rose to become the country's beloved general.

At the marketplace, an old man confronts Titus. He declares that slavery was outlawed long ago under his own authority from the Unseen One. When Titus refuses to release Anna, the old man mysteriously sends him into a sudden sleep and leads the girl away. He identifies himself as the Old Judge and calls the approaching Darien the true chosen king.

Crowds fill Sarum to welcome Darien. At the palace, he presents not one hundred but two hundred Palatian medals. King Lawrence cannot refuse his promise and publicly grants Darien permission to marry Princess Michelle the following Saturday.

The Old Judge takes Anna to his cottage near Hailsham. He believes her impossible story because the Unseen One works through mysteries beyond any map. Time behaves strangely around him: Anna appears to sleep for hours, then finds that only minutes have passed and her untouched tea is hot and full again.

Darien houses Kyle in his castle. Prince George secretly warns his friend that Lawrence's jealousy has become dangerous. The Old Judge has said Darien is chosen to become king, and Lawrence knows it. Darien rejects any thought of betrayal and insists that he will remain loyal, but George fears his father's suspicion may kill him.

A message from General Liddell reports that Adrian raiders have crossed into the neutral Territory of Peace. Darien is ordered to join Liddell's campaign. Visiting the Old Judge must wait again, and Kyle chooses to accompany Darien as his personal assistant, excited by the thought of seeing a battle.
