Home Again

Jason Whittaker is back in Odyssey - secretly - worn out from his last case and done with the agency for good, hoping to find rest and God again in a quiet cabin by Trickle Lake. But secrets don't keep long at Whit's End, and soon Connie, Penny, and Wooton are scheming a "picnic" a little too close to cabin number three. Meanwhile, Eugene's new computer system at J&J Antiques flashes an FBI warning: a traveling jewel thief has been swapping fake diamonds for real ones... and the suspect's sketch looks exactly like Eugene. Convinced Jason must be on the case, Eugene carries the suspicious rings to Jansen's Jewelers - and walks straight into the real crooks, who knock him out and tie him up. Alone at the lake, Jason discovers that silence is harder than any mission. Rest will have to wait.

The story

As Jack and Joanne Allen prepare to retire, travel, and close J&J Antiques, Eugene builds an inventory system to help Joanne sell the remaining stock. At Whit’s End, a security sensor in the old tunnel alerts Whit to a hidden visitor: Jason has returned to Odyssey. His last case in London has left him exhausted, and he has resigned from the agency. Wanting to recover and reconnect with God, he plans to stay alone in a cabin near Trickle Lake and asks that no one learn he is home.

Joanne has already glimpsed Jason driving through town, and Connie hears enough to guess the truth. Whit asks her to respect Jason’s privacy and pray for him. Connie promptly assumes that Eugene already knows and tells him. Eugene warns her against jumping to conclusions - then Penny walks in, hears the secret, and begins urging Connie to visit Jason. Connie misses him deeply but insists that she will prove she can honor his wishes.

While installing the inventory system at the antique shop, Eugene and Joanne enter a pair of supposed Pomona diamond rings. The system displays an FBI warning about a traveling scam in which a thief uses fake diamonds to distract jewelers and replace genuine stones. The sketch of the suspect resembles Eugene, and Joanne realizes that the pictured man is the person who sold her the rings.

Eugene connects the jewelry scam with Jason’s secret return and assumes that Jason must be investigating it. Joanne entrusts him with the rings so he can have them appraised and bring the information to Jason. Neither of them knows that Jason has left the agency and returned for an entirely different reason.

Penny recruits Wooton to discover Jason’s location. Wooton’s questions lead Whit to reveal that his mysterious stack of books, groceries, and fishing poles is going to someone staying on the south side of Trickle Lake. Because Wooton delivers mail to the rented cabins, he identifies cabin number three. Penny then arranges a picnic with Wooton and Connie near Jason’s retreat without telling Connie the real purpose.

At the cabin, Whit warns Jason that solitude is a spiritual discipline and may prove difficult for someone accustomed to constant activity. Jason confidently insists that he can handle it, but once Whit leaves, the quiet, the crickets, and his own restless thoughts make prayer and Bible reading unexpectedly hard. He soon considers escaping the silence with a walk.

Eugene brings the rings to Jansen’s Jewelers. The jeweler recognizes his appearance from the scam warning and drags him into a locked workshop. Eugene initially believes he is being mistaken for the thief, but the jeweler’s brother, Rudolph, is the actual man from the sketch. The two criminals accuse Eugene of copying their scheme, knock him unconscious, tie him up, and begin making plans for him.
