Penny Bassett, née Penny Wise, is a painter in Odyssey and one of the town's warmest and quirkiest residents. She grew up in Pennsylvania, where her parents Frank and Eleanor and her sister Charlotte still live. Her best friend is Connie Kendall, whom she met in a college art class. Penny works in the art world, selling paintings at a gallery and showing her own work in exhibitions. She also teaches art, bringing classes to a children's hospital and a juvenile detention center. Relentlessly cheerful and a little scattered, she believes the best about people, and her Christian faith shapes how she paints and how she forgives. She is married to Wooton Bassett, the comic-book artist whose goofy imagination matches her own.
