The Green Ring Conspiracy

A backpack stuffed with one hundred thousand dollars in counterfeit cash has turned up in Odyssey, and Whit and Detective Polehaus find it packed with clues - flight plans, a marked map of Trickle Lake, and a page of mysterious numbers. Then Secret Service Agent Tanner drops a bombshell: Whit's grandson Monty is an undercover agent gone rogue, tangled in a criminal scheme called the Green Ring. Worse, Monty has slipped out of the hospital in stolen clothes, and no one knows where he is. Meanwhile, a smooth-talking boy named Buck charms his way into a job at Whit's End... but he's really a spy for the crooks, hunting for the backpack and a missing phone. Across town, Connie starts an art class and discovers a surprising talent for copying famous paintings. But the biggest surprise waits at Whit's house, where the garage door stands open - and Monty is inside.

The story

Connie begins a graphic-design course at Campbell College with Professor Benjamin Trask. She sits beside Penny Wise, an anxious student who is convinced she has no artistic ability. When Trask assigns the class to draw an animal from memory, Connie's rabbit comes out looking as though it has fangs. Penny fares no better, but Connie encourages her and agrees to become her partner for the class.

At the hospital, Detective Don Polehaus reviews security footage and learns that Monty Whittaker's disappearance was no accident. Monty has stolen another patient's clothes and deliberately slipped away. The police and the Secret Service are alerted, while Whit is warned not to tell Jana what has happened.

Polehaus brings Emily's recovered backpack to Whit's End and examines it with Whit. It holds one hundred thousand dollars in counterfeit bills, an old copy of Oliver Twist, the original and revised flight plans, a map of Odyssey with Trickle Lake circled, and a page of handwritten numbers. Buck Oliver notices the backpack while delivering carnival posters and realizes that it is the one Dirk lost. Hoping to get close to it - and to Dirk's missing Appleberry phone - Buck applies for a job at Whit's End. He quickly charms Emily and hints that the two of them might make a good investigating team.

Secret Service Agent Lauren Tanner arrives in Odyssey and tells Whit and Polehaus that Monty is now considered a rogue agent. Monty had gone undercover after an investigation into counterfeit money in Des Moines led to Dirk Beggs in Chicago. Dirk was connected to a criminal known as the Stiletto, and Monty had joined Dirk's circle by posing as a small-time criminal. Then Dirk began talking about a tremendous deal called the Green Ring, involving millions of dollars, and Monty disappeared.

Dirk now lies in a guarded hospital room, unable to answer questions. Polehaus wonders whether Wally Haggler, an Odyssey resident with a criminal past, could be the local contact behind the counterfeit operation. Tanner sends Whit home and assures him that the Secret Service will handle the case, though she quietly orders agents to watch him.

Back at the college, Connie discovers an unexpected strength. Although she cannot draw the Mona Lisa from memory, she produces an excellent copy while looking at Trask's painting. Penny is amazed by Connie's talent for reproducing existing artwork and proposes that they start a business painting replicas. She admits that she often lacks confidence, then tells Connie that she is a Christian and attends the small campus group Trask has begun.

Buck reports to his guardian, Jebidiah Skint, that the counterfeit money is in Polehaus's hands. Buck hopes Emily can help him locate Dirk's phone before the authorities do. Meanwhile, Whit returns home and notices that the garage door has been left open. He cautiously enters the house and calls for his grandson. Monty is there.
