The Green Ring Conspiracy

A stolen fortune in counterfeit cash is racing toward Chicago on a secret train - and Connie, Penny, and Wooton are locked inside with it. When they pry open a crate, they find a drugged Jason Whittaker, who climbs toward the engine to stop the train himself. Back in Odyssey, Whit and the police trace the smugglers' route past Haggler's Junkyard, where a rusty track switch might be their only chance to end the run...if it can be thrown in time. The train diverts, the crooks slam on the brakes, and the crash lands the whole scheme in the hands of the law. Meanwhile Buck faces his own choice: escape with Skint, or stay behind and finally tell the truth. The hostages walk free, the money and the engraving plates are recovered, and the Green Ring is broken at last. But as Jason says goodbye to his father, both know the greater battle isn't over.

The story

Read the full synopsis 2 min

The eight auction trucks prove to be decoys: not one contains counterfeit money. Whit, Polehaus, Eugene, Matthew, and Emily turn back to the Ross compound. Old plans reveal a fifth building - an enormous underground bunker - but when police raid it, they find only hay bales. Empty picnic containers and Wooton's blanket show that Connie, Penny, and Wooton have been there and are now hostages.

At the hospital, Monty forces Dirk to explain the numbers. They identify freight cars on a private train bound for Chicago. The train will use an abandoned route, then separate its cars onto side tracks so other engines can carry the money to different parts of the country. Matthew finds an old road from the compound ending at those tracks. The criminals have moved everything without using the watched roads.

Connie, Penny, and Wooton are locked inside one of the moving freight cars with the counterfeit cash. Connie helps Penny see that even after someone has betrayed her trust, she can seek wisdom from Jesus, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit rather than refuse to trust anyone again. As they move boxes to reach an emergency exit, they hear a noise inside a large crate and free a drugged, disguised Jason. He tells Connie to warn Whit that the engraving plates are at TLC, then climbs toward the engine to stop the train.

The old track runs past Haggler's Junkyard. Eugene contacts Wally, and Matthew recognizes that a manual switch can divert the train onto an overgrown spur leading into the yard. Wally and Jay wrench the rusted switch into position just before the engine arrives. Jason fights the crew in the cab, and the unexpected turn finally makes them use the brakes. The train crashes into Wally's storage building, which absorbs much of the impact. The hostages survive, the counterfeit money is recovered, and Archie and his associates are arrested.

Skint returns to the carnival trailer intending to use Katrina as a hostage for his escape. Buck finally refuses. When Skint makes him choose between leaving with them or staying behind, Buck stays. Skint abandons him and flees alone. Buck frees Katrina, and she tells him that she had prayed he would make the right choice. She takes him to Whit's End on the way to the police station, where he apologizes to Eugene, Matthew, and Emily for his lies.

Connie delivers Jason's message. Monty and Whit realize that TLC means Trickle Lake, Dock C. A truck from the compound had stopped at Trickle Lake Concrete, allowing the engraving plates to be sealed in concrete and dropped from the dock on a chain. When Whit, Monty, and Polehaus return to the boathouse, they catch Trask trying to recover them. Polehaus arrests him, stopping anyone from using the plates to restart the counterfeit operation.

Skint remains missing, but the Green Ring's local network has been broken. Jason quietly visits Whit and explains that Mr. Grote had discovered his deception and arranged to ship him to Chicago inside the crate. Jason intends to pursue Grote back to Hong Kong and preserve his Stiletto cover if he can. Father and son say goodbye with affection, knowing that the greater battle is not yet finished.
