You're Two Kind

Ryan only means to help when he volunteers to partner with Brad, the boy who freezes up in front of the whole class - until he overhears Brad mocking him behind his back. Stuck together anyway, Brad admits his secret: he clams up because Valerie might be watching, and Ryan coaches him through it. Then Ryan spots Brad laughing with Valerie at Whit's End, and revenge takes over... he splices Brad's private confession into their class video. Moments before it plays, Brad apologizes, says he stood up for Ryan, and even invites him to his birthday party - but Ryan is too late to stop the tape, and Brad's crush spills out for everyone to hear. Ryan learns that kindness can't wait to be repaid, the boys forgive each other, and Valerie, flattered after all, lets Brad buy her an ice cream. Meanwhile, Eugene fibs his way through a friend's drastic haircut and a growing pile of bejeweled gifts he can't stand, until the givers reveal they planned it all to teach him that kindness needs honesty too.

The story

While substituting for a middle-school history teacher, Katrina assigns her students a paired video presentation about World War I. Ryan gives an excellent report in class, but Brad stumbles badly through his own. Wanting to help, Ryan asks Katrina to make Brad his partner for the next project.

Before Ryan can tell Brad, he overhears him mocking Ryan's dramatic speaking style to other students. Hurt and angry, Ryan tries to withdraw his request, but Katrina has already assigned the partners. Brad reluctantly works with him and finally confides the real reason he struggles to speak: he has a crush on Valerie, and the thought of her watching makes him too nervous to think. Ryan promises to keep the secret and patiently helps Brad imagine speaking to his grandmother instead.

At Whit's End, Ryan finds Brad laughing with Valerie and her friends. Believing Brad has betrayed him again, Ryan leaves to edit their recording alone. He inserts Brad's private confession into the final presentation, intending to humiliate him in front of the class.

Before the video plays, Brad apologizes for making fun of Ryan. He explains that the other students had brought up the old joke again, but he told them how much Ryan had helped him. Brad even invites Ryan to his birthday party. Ryan suddenly regrets his revenge and tries to stop Katrina from showing the project, but he is too late. The class hears Brad describe his feelings for Valerie, and Brad runs out in embarrassment.

Whit helps Ryan see that his kindness had depended on receiving kindness in return. Jesus calls His followers to be good even to people who do not repay them and to seek forgiveness when they cause harm. Ryan apologizes to Brad, who admits that his own ridicule began the trouble and forgives him. To Ryan's surprise, Valerie is flattered by the accidental confession and agrees to let Brad buy her an ice cream.

Meanwhile, Eugene tries to spare Katrina's feelings by pretending to like her very short new haircut. He also pretends to admire the glittering wallet, vest, socks, and laptop case that Connie covers with imitation jewels for him. His efforts to sound kind only encourage Connie to keep making more things he hates.

When Eugene finally returns the gifts and honestly says the style does not suit him, Katrina and Connie reveal that they designed the whole situation to teach him a lesson. Katrina already knew he preferred her longer hair, and Connie knew he disliked the bejeweled clothes. They wanted him to find the balance between honesty and gentleness. Eugene discovers, as Ryan has, that real kindness is neither conditional favor nor pleasant dishonesty; it requires truth, humility, and thoughtful care for the other person.
