Olivia recruits Matthew and Camilla to help record Odyssey residents telling local stories for an English project. Camilla dreams of becoming a television reporter and tries to turn Red Hollard's interview into her own performance. When Olivia insists that she simply hold the microphone and let Red speak, Camilla walks away in a huff. The interview then collapses when the camera battery dies.
While Matthew and Camilla search Whit's storage room for a power cord, Camilla begins kicking a soccer ball despite Matthew's warning. He tries to block her shot, and the ball knocks over Whit's expensive oscilloscope and cracks its screen. The machine still turns on, so the children leave without telling Whit what happened.
Red later tells Camilla a retelling of Jesus' parable about an unforgiving servant. In his version, a mayor lends a tow-truck driver named Barney an enormous sum. When Barney loses the truck and cannot repay him, the mayor mercifully cancels the whole debt. Camilla is impressed by the lesson and decides that she should begin forgiving people.
Camilla starts with Olivia, announcing that she forgives her for being rude during the failed interview. She then forgives Eva for assigning extra dish duty, Matthew for leaving food stuck to a bowl, and David for refusing to buy her an obnoxious doll. None of them believes an apology is owed. Camilla becomes frustrated that her generous forgiveness is not producing the grateful responses she expected.
Olivia's finished recording supplies the rest of Red's story. After his own great debt is erased, Barney harshly demands small payments from everyone who owes him. The mayor learns of his cruelty and punishes him for refusing to give others the mercy he has received. David asks Camilla whether she has become so busy cataloging other people's wrongs that she has ignored her own need for forgiveness.
Whit arrives, and Matthew and Camilla confess what happened to the oscilloscope. They offer to help pay for it and ask him to forgive them. Whit does so gladly and explains that he has already repaired the machine. He had known about the damage when he saw Camilla earlier - even when he gave her free ice cream for finding the missing soccer ball - but had been waiting for her to tell the truth.
Camilla realizes that forgiveness begins with understanding how much mercy she herself needs. Her lesson immediately gets another test when she remembers that she also forgot to tell David to thaw dinner. Instead of beginning another list of wrongs, the family chooses pizza and a fresh start.
