Wooton Knows Best

Wooton is off to counsel first graders at a Camp What-A-Nut retreat, and he can bring exactly one helper. Olivia wants the spot because Christian singer Melissa Cyphers will be there, and her brother Matthew wants it too - so Wooton tests them both in his Sunday school class. Olivia memorizes all of 1 Corinthians 13 to prove herself, but Matthew plays with the kids and learns their favorite toys, their allergies, their friends... and he gets the job. Furious, Olivia accuses her brother of stealing the trip, until her own recited verses catch up with her: knowledge without love is nothing. A peace offering from Matthew brings an apology from Olivia, and on departure morning she gets a surprise of her own - singing beside the bus with Melissa Cyphers herself.

Wooton announces that he will counsel first graders at a weekend retreat at Camp What-A-Nut and needs one assistant. Olivia eagerly volunteers when she learns that Christian singer Melissa Cyphers will be the special guest. Matthew also wants to go because Melissa's husband is a producer and sound engineer whose work fascinates him. There is room for only one helper, so Wooton must choose between them.

Neither Parker child wants to yield the opportunity. Olivia argues that she heard about it first and works better with children, while Matthew refuses to accept that her eagerness automatically makes the place hers. Whit advises Wooton to decide which child has the skills the job requires, explain his reasoning clearly, and be gentle with the one who is disappointed.

Wooton brings Olivia and Matthew to his first-grade Sunday school class so he can observe them. He explains that the retreat lessons will focus on love in 1 Corinthians 13. Matthew immediately joins the children in building and playing, while Olivia concentrates on the lesson's subject. Hoping to demonstrate her dedication, she memorizes the entire chapter and proudly recites it to her family.

Wooton's final test consists of questions about the children themselves. Matthew knows their favorite toys, friendships, allergies, and family circumstances because he has spent time listening to them. Olivia cannot answer. She had assumed that playing meant Matthew was not taking the opportunity seriously, but Wooton explains that getting to know the children is exactly what he needs his assistant to do. He chooses Matthew.

Deeply disappointed, Olivia accuses Matthew of stealing the trip from her and says cruel things about him. Their father, David, reminds her of a boy from his youth group who possessed impressive Bible knowledge but never lived by it. When Olivia begins reciting 1 Corinthians 13 again, she hears its message differently: knowledge without love is nothing. David tells her that memorizing Scripture matters most when she puts it into practice, especially when love is difficult.

Matthew sends a first grader named Kenny to ask Olivia for a Bible verse about apologizing to a sister. Olivia recognizes her brother's peace offering and apologizes for her own behavior. She accepts that Matthew earned the position and agrees to come when the family sees him off.

On departure morning, Wooton and Whit reveal a surprise for the children who cannot attend the retreat. Melissa Cyphers performs beside the bus and invites Olivia to join her in singing a chorus based on 1 Corinthians 13. Olivia gets to meet the singer she admires, but the greater gift is learning that God's words about love are meant to shape the way she treats the people closest to her.
