In a Kenyan village, Michael struggles to help his sister Cece fetch water because his heart condition has grown worse. He overheard his parents discussing the sale of their last goat to pay a doctor, but the goat supplies their milk. Feeling unable to contribute to his family, Michael tells Cece that he is not worth such a sacrifice.
The Parker family flies to Kenya for a week of service with a Compassion project. Eva expects to use her nursing skills, David plans to help construct a school with his new tools, Matthew will upgrade computers, Olivia has prepared a Bible school and documentary, and Camilla has learned to knit. Each arrives eager to perform a useful and impressive task.
Record rainfall immediately changes their plans. Floods have washed out bridges, forcing the Bible school to be postponed and keeping patients away from the clinic. The unreliable electricity prevents Matthew from using the computers. David volunteers to repair a leaking roof instead, while Camilla befriends Cece on the football field. Olivia and Matthew wander off to film village homes, and Matthew becomes determined to see a monkey.
David slips from the wet roof and fractures his wrist, ending his construction work before it begins. Eva’s first patient is her accident-prone husband, while the expectant mothers she hoped to assist deliver healthy babies without her. The family members who came to feel useful begin to feel unnecessary.
Across the swollen river, Matthew sees movement he believes is a monkey and steps onto slippery rocks for a closer look. He falls into the deep current. Olivia cannot pull him out with a branch, but Michael hears her cries, brings a rope, and helps drag Matthew to safety. The animal turns out to be a mongoose.
Moments after the rescue, Michael collapses. Cece identifies him as her brother, and the Parkers carry him to the clinic. Tests at a city hospital reveal a large ventricular septal defect - a serious hole in his heart. Although Michael has lived with heart problems for years, the effort of saving Matthew has exposed how dangerously weak he has become. Matthew fears that the rescue worsened Michael’s condition and wishes he had some way to repay the boy who saved his life.
