The Labyrinth

Jason Whittaker is undercover in London as a criminal called the Grinder, hoping to trap the crooked Reggie Fingers and get closer to the terrorist Grote - but Reggie has seen through the disguise and set a trap of his own. A staged kidnapping, a stolen coat, and knockout gas in an MI5 van later, the cameras all say Jason attacked his own agents. Now MI5, Scotland Yard, and Reggie's thugs are hunting him, and his only ally is Sue, a streetwise orphan Reggie hired for the trick and now won't let go. Blocked in with sacks of flour, the two escape through an old heating duct and turn to the only people Jason can reach... Whit's friends Dale and Ann Jacobs, visiting London. Posing as an American father and daughter, Dale and Sue slip past a suspicious detective, pull Jason's hidden briefcase from an air vent, and smuggle it out in a suitcase. Jason has his secret equipment at last - but every hunter in London is still on his trail.

The story

In London, MI5 agents Billings and Florin watch Jason Whittaker enter Reggie Fingers' fish-and-chips restaurant. Jason is posing as an American criminal called the Grinder to investigate Reggie's dealings with Mr. Grote, the terrorist behind the Green Ring conspiracy. Reggie sees through the operation and has already prepared a trap.

Reggie claims that he has kidnapped Billings's young daughter, Sue, and intends to send both her and Jason to Grote. Jason knocks out a guard named Mycroft Thugg and attempts to escape with the frightened girl. The kidnapping is a performance: Sue is a streetwise orphan whom Reggie hired to play the part, and hidden cameras have recorded Jason's reaction. Once Sue has seen too much, however, Reggie refuses to pay or release her.

Reggie's men have also stolen Jason's coat and hat. One of them uses the disguise to enter the MI5 surveillance van and release gas that knocks Billings and Florin unconscious. Security footage and witnesses now make it appear that Jason attacked the agents and betrayed the investigation.

Jason and Sue block the back-room door with sacks of flour and escape through an old heating duct. Sue scouts the police activity around the van and reports that the authorities believe Jason is responsible. Although she would rather disappear into London's streets, Jason warns that Reggie now knows where to find her and asks her to remain with him.

Without his telephone or equipment, Jason calls Whit and asks for help. Whit directs him to Dale and Ann Jacobs, who are visiting London for a journalism conference. Jason brings Sue to their hotel suite and asks Dale to retrieve a hidden briefcase from Jason's watched room at another hotel.

Dale and Sue pose as an American father and daughter. A Scotland Yard detective searches their room while Sue slips into the connected room, removes the briefcase from an air vent, and hides inside Jason's ordinary suitcase. When the detective becomes suspicious, Dale leaves with both the suitcase and briefcase, exits on another floor, and flees through the back of the hotel with Sue. Jason now has his secret equipment, but MI5, Scotland Yard, Reggie, and Grote are all hunting him.
