Connie makes sure every streamer, banner, balloon, and refreshment at Whit’s End is perfect for Whit’s homecoming. She can hardly contain her excitement, but Jack chooses not to join her at the airport, saying that he prefers a quieter welcome. After Connie hurries away, Jack quietly says goodbye as though he does not expect to see her again.
Whit, Jason, and Eugene arrive in Odyssey longing for rest and peace. Instead, an enormous crowd greets Whit at the airport. Bernard has organized the celebration, Bart has supplied decorations and fireworks, and Harlow has arranged crowd control and a motorcade. Everyone plans to escort Whit to City Hall, where the rest of the town is waiting.
Jason and Eugene stay behind to collect the luggage. Eugene insists that Katrina’s rejection has left him at peace, but Jason gently suggests that it must still hurt. Eugene finally admits that it does. Their return to the same airport where both men had once said hopeful farewells to the women they loved now feels painfully ironic.
Eugene’s luggage has accidentally been placed on another flight, which is first delayed and then canceled. He decides to wait until the next day rather than attend the celebration. When Connie arrives too late to find Whit, she offers Eugene a ride to his dorm. Although Eugene repeatedly hints that he does not want her to ask about Katrina, Connie surprises him by respecting his privacy and concentrating on finding Whit.
At City Hall, Mayor Tom Riley gives Whit a key to the city and declares the next day John Avery Whittaker Day. The grand welcome becomes even more chaotic when a spark reaches Bart’s fireworks and sets them all off at once. No one is injured, but the deafening display sends the celebration moving to Whit’s End.
Connie tries to follow, only to run over one of the tent pegs scattered by the fireworks. With a flat tire and no spare, she runs the rest of the way. By the time she arrives, however, Tom has already taken the exhausted Whit home.
Jason returns to Whit’s house and discovers Jack packing the last of his belongings. Jack has been moving out secretly for weeks because he believes he should give Whit his home back. Jason insists that the house has room for all three of them, but Jack says the arrangements are already settled. After Jason drives him to the Cathcart Hotel, Jack refuses another invitation to return home or even greet Whit that night.
Once Jason leaves, Jack asks about the one-way airline ticket he has reserved for the next morning. His supposed temporary stay at the hotel is hiding a much larger departure, and he has told no one where he is going or why.
Meanwhile, Connie reaches Whit’s house and begs Tom to let her see Whit. Tom explains that Whit is completely exhausted and should not be disturbed. Then Whit awakens and calls out to her. Connie finally embraces the friend she has waited so long to welcome, and Whit assures her, “I’m finally home.”
