At the Universal Encyclopedia meeting, Whit reports on his work with the archaeological mission in the Middle East. The board thanks him for his service and affirms its commitment to supporting Christian missions. Then its members present Whit with a startling new request - one that he knows will require serious thought and prayer.
Eugene arrives at the hotel exhausted after spending the night answering questions from the police. His attempt to break into the Lake Shore Lodge’s computer system has nearly gotten him arrested, although his passport has proved that he cannot be the leader of the hacking ring the police are investigating. With Mr. Shanks’s help, Eugene has escaped jail with a fine, but he still has not spoken with Katrina.
Whit reveals that the board wants him to travel around the world as an ambassador to the missions it supports. Eugene is alarmed by the possibility that Whit might leave Odyssey again. Whit assures him that he is returning home for now, but he intends to rest and seek God’s guidance before answering the board. He reminds Eugene that Katrina’s future must also be left in God’s hands.
Whit directs Eugene to Paul’s description of love in First Corinthians. Love is patient, kind, and concerned with what is right for others - qualities Eugene’s frantic behavior has not shown. Eugene agrees that he needs rest, but he immediately continues his pursuit of Katrina.
At the Shanks home, Katrina’s father confronts Eugene about the damage he and Katrina are doing to their relationship. Love alone does not necessarily mean that two people belong together. When Eugene admits that he hopes to propose, Mr. Shanks points out that Eugene has never asked his permission. Eugene apologizes and asks at last. Mr. Shanks grants permission but warns him that Brandon has already asked too. He will approve whichever man Katrina chooses.
Eugene finds Katrina at a Christian fellowship prayer meeting on campus. She refuses to leave with him because she has asked for time, so he joins her small prayer group. Instead of honestly praying, Eugene and Katrina use their prayers to criticize one another. Their uncomfortable exchange soon drives the third member of the group away, and Brandon has to quiet their argument before it disrupts everyone else.
In the cafeteria, Eugene accuses Brandon of using the situation to draw Katrina away from him. Katrina then tells Eugene that Brandon has proposed and that she has promised to think and pray about it. Although she is honored by Brandon’s offer, she has not accepted it because she still loves Eugene.
Katrina explains why love has not made her decision simple. Eugene has behaved as though he is panicking over the loss of something that belongs to him, while Brandon has sincerely tried to protect her freedom to choose the person who is best for her. Eugene finally recognizes that his actions have been centered on what he wants rather than on Katrina’s good.
Katrina wants her heart and mind to agree before she makes a lifelong decision. Eugene admits his immaturity in love and faith, yet he believes they could build a life together under God’s guidance. Convinced that they cannot keep wondering forever, he asks Katrina to marry him and presses her for an immediate answer.
Later, Eugene reaches the airport just before Whit and Jason’s flight leaves for Odyssey. Katrina has come to see him off, and the two exchange tender farewells. After she departs, however, Eugene tells Whit and Jason that her answer was no. Though they love each other, he now accepts that love may not mean they are right for one another. For the first time, he feels able to leave both Katrina and his future in God’s hands.
Jason expects their return to Odyssey to bring some peace after so much turmoil. Whit, still weighing the board’s unexpected offer, senses otherwise. “I have a feeling that things are just getting stirred up.”
