Whit and Eugene return from Israel by way of Chicago, where Jason meets them at the airport. Whit and Eugene plan to attend a meeting with the board of the Universal Encyclopedia the next morning, but Eugene’s thoughts quickly turn to Katrina. Hoping to surprise her, he telephones her apartment and speaks with her roommate, Janice.
Janice tells Eugene that Katrina has gone to the Lake Shore Lodge with Brandon. She mentions an engagement and says that something important is happening that afternoon. Eugene takes her words to mean that Katrina and Brandon are about to be married. When the lodge confirms that Katrina Shanks is connected with a wedding party in the Wellington Courtyard, his worst fears seem certain.
Jason urges Eugene to go to the lodge and fight for Katrina before it is too late. Whit is uneasy about the idea of interrupting a wedding, but Eugene cannot bear to stand by while Katrina marries someone else. Still dressed in the caftan he has brought home from the Middle East, he rushes to the lodge and bursts into the ceremony with an objection.
The bride and groom are not Katrina and Brandon. Mr. and Mrs. Shanks are renewing their wedding vows, and Brandon, who has recently been ordained, is conducting the ceremony. Eugene’s frantic interruption leaves everyone astonished and turns a joyful family occasion into an embarrassing scene.
Katrina is more wounded than angry. Eugene has assumed that she would abandon their relationship and marry another man without even speaking to him. Though Eugene insists that the entire disaster is only a misunderstanding, Katrina cannot dismiss what his reaction reveals. His lack of trust has made her question how well he truly knows her and what he believes about her character.
Eugene checks into the lodge and calls Whit, admitting how badly he has mishandled the situation. Brandon then visits him on Katrina’s behalf. He explains that Katrina feels betrayed and needs time before speaking with Eugene. Brandon believes Eugene’s impulsive behavior points to deeper problems of trust, maturity, and faith, and he tells Eugene that Katrina wants him to return to Odyssey and wait until she is ready to talk.
Because Brandon cares deeply for Katrina, Eugene doubts whether his advice is entirely selfless. Instead of leaving, he tries to contact Katrina directly. When the desk clerk refuses to reveal her room number because she has requested privacy, Eugene uses a computer to break into the hotel’s records. He finds a room registered to K. Shanks and hurries there to apologize.
Mr. Shanks answers the door. He explains that the family switched rooms and that Katrina had been staying next door, but she has already left with Brandon for the university. As Eugene prepares to check out, the hotel traces the unauthorized entry into its computer system. The manager and a detective begin looking for him, adding another consequence to his reckless attempt to reach Katrina.
On the drive back, Brandon encourages Katrina not to make too much of Eugene’s mistake. Katrina explains that the problem is larger than one embarrassing interruption. Miscommunication and uncertainty have troubled her relationship with Eugene for a long time, and she has begun to wonder whether they are truly right for each other.
Katrina admits that her heart is drawn to Eugene because he is gentle, kind, intelligent, and wonderfully unusual. Yet her head tells her that she needs someone wise, balanced, mature, and firmly grounded in his Christian faith - someone more like Brandon. Brandon reveals how deeply he cares for her and asks her to consider what their own closeness has become. Then he puts the question plainly: “Katrina, will you marry me?”
