The Parker children tell Whit about the exhausting week that begins when their grandmother, Abuelita Lucia, comes to Odyssey. Eva becomes determined to make every corner of the house perfect for her mother's visit. The family cleans frantically, only to learn at the airport that Lucia has brought a much larger surprise: Eva's sister Rosalita intends to hold her wedding at the Parker home that very week.
Rosalita had been engaged to Orlando but ended the relationship after he obeyed her request not to celebrate her birthday. She then planned to marry Rodrigo. When jealous Orlando threatened to interrupt that future wedding, Rosalita decided to move it forward and come to Odyssey. Lucia has rejected an elopement but agreed to the Parker home because Odyssey has no church matching the Spanish setting she imagined.
The Parkers surrender rooms, possessions, and privacy as relatives arrive. Matthew's collection supplies thirteen ceremonial coins, Camilla's prized muddy soccer shoes are washed, and the children sleep in the basement while visiting cousins fill the bedrooms. Lucia insists that family members stay together rather than use hotels, and Eva keeps agreeing because she wants to honor her mother and share their traditions with her children.
Orlando appears on the lawn with a mariachi band and begs Rosalita to take him back. Because Rosalita has not arrived, Lucia asks Eva to impersonate her sister from a window. Eva refuses to lie but tries to explain the truth; Orlando mistakes her for Rosalita anyway. She eventually persuades him to leave, though the public spectacle adds to the family's exhaustion.
After days of crowding and wedding preparations, David and the children ask Eva whether their immediate family can escape to a hotel for one night. Eva feels torn between caring for the relatives she loves and recognizing how much the strain is costing her husband and children. The night away gives them needed rest before the ceremony.
At the church, minutes before the wedding, Lucia finally reaches Rosalita by telephone. Rosalita has eloped - not with Rodrigo, but with Orlando after meeting him at the airport. All the Parker family's work appears wasted. When Lucia pities Rosalita for missing her traditional wedding, Eva can no longer remain silent. She explains how everyone has turned life upside down for a sister who has thought only of herself, while Lucia has taken Eva's reliable family for granted.
Lucia admits Eva is right. Because Eva has always been sensible and strong, her mother has spent more time worrying about difficult Rosalita and has failed to appreciate her dependable daughter. They apologize to one another and reconcile.
With a church, food, music, and a house full of guests already assembled, the family turns the abandoned wedding into a joyful reunion. Once the pressure disappears, the cousins enjoy one another and the Parkers even miss them when they leave. Lucia remains for two more weeks, giving Whit a chance to meet the grandmother behind their remarkable visit.
