Mary Barclay is the wife of George Barclay and the mother of Jimmy, Donna, and little Stewart. She is a loving, steady presence in one of Odyssey's best-known families. She holds the household together through car trouble on vacations, ruined Thanksgivings, and the upheaval of George's lost job and his call into ministry. She has a mother's good instincts. She senses when a friend is bad company for Donna, and she points her daughter to Scripture rather than lecturing her. She also asks the searching questions, such as whether the family is truly helping the needy or only easing its own conscience. When money runs short, she quietly finds work herself, knowing all the while what a job means to her husband's heart.
