As former residents return to support Odyssey in the Best Small Town competition, Connie hosts special interviews with old friends. Lawrence Hodges admits that an accident has ended his space-program studies and that he now works at a laundromat. Jared DeWhite, now a junior CIA analyst, reacts far too nervously when Connie jokes about his old belief that the president might be an alien.
Jimmy, Curt Stevens, Jack Davis, and Lucy Cunningham-Schultz reunite at Whit's End. The young men try to make modest jobs sound impressive, but their easy conversation stops when Lucy arrives. Whit says old friendships sometimes need time to adjust because people and seasons change.
Connie discovers that Jimmy has quietly liked Lucy since childhood. Because they live in different states and may not meet again soon, she encourages him to speak rather than carry an uncommunicated crush forever. Jimmy begins planning a private Imagination Station trip where they can talk.
Whit learns that Jack and Lucy have dated on and off for four years while attending the same college in Texas. A recent argument about Jack's failure to commit may have ended the relationship. Jack loves Lucy and believes God has confirmed their relationship, but he has kept postponing marriage. Whit warns him not to let fear make the choice for him.
Curt avoids entering the high-school gym because it brings back his worst memory with Lucy. In high school, he was supposed to attend the senior dinner with her, but he stood her up rather than discuss their future. He has not spoken to her since. Seeing Lucy again awakens his old feelings, and Bernard advises him to apologize honestly.
The friends tour old familiar places and discover how much has changed. Their favorite pizza restaurant now serves seafood, and each remembers a different version of Lucy's tastes and habits. Lucy finally says she loves and misses them all and wants more time together, then asks everyone to meet again at Whit's End that evening.
Jimmy, Jack, and Curt each believe Lucy's words and glance were meant especially for him. Jimmy chooses a Lewis and Clark journey for a romantic conversation. Jack asks Whit to send Lucy to the park gazebo, where he hopes to decide whether he can commit. Curt arranges a dinner in the elementary-school cafeteria where he first met her.
Three old friends are now preparing three separate conversations with the same woman. Connie, Whit, and Bernard encourage them without realizing the others' plans, and what began as a warm reunion becomes a tangled night of hopes, regrets, and misunderstandings.
