Accidental Dilemma

The secret is out: a post on Rusty's blog has revealed that Jason Whittaker is a government agent, and now every enemy he ever crossed knows where to find him. As crowds swarm Whit's End hoping to glimpse a real spy, Jason slips away to Trickle Lake, where agent Tasha Forbes brings grim news... the Whisperer, a computer criminal Jason helped put away, has escaped and sworn revenge. Before Tasha can whisk Jason out of Odyssey for good, a model boat glides up to the dock, fires drugged darts, and Jason is carried off - along with Grady, a boy who picked the wrong moment to say hello. Jason wakes in a hidden cabin, where the Whisperer demands more than payback: he wants Applesauce, an old computer program powerful enough to hand its owner enormous control. When the villain threatens Grady with an electrified cane, Jason agrees to lead him to it. But the Whisperer keeps the boy close as leverage - insurance against every trick Jason might try.

The story

Connie discovers a new post on Rusty Gordon's blog revealing that Jason Whittaker works for the government. Jason calls himself an analyst and pretends not to worry, but he and Whit privately activate an emergency procedure. The news has exposed Jason to every enemy who might want revenge, and one criminal immediately changes his plans to strike.

Crowds surround the closed Whit's End, hoping to see Odyssey's own secret agent. While renovations continue, Whit sends Jason a coded message and tells the curious visitors that his son is gone. Jason slips away to Trickle Lake, where Tasha Forbes meets him under an old password.

At the lake, Grady and Carson are attempting a father-and-son fishing trip. Grady is much more interested in radio reports about Jason than in baiting hooks. When they spot Jason and Tasha on the dock, they watch from a distance.

Tasha explains that the Whisperer, a gifted computer criminal Jason once helped imprison, has escaped by manipulating government records. He has long promised revenge. Procedure requires Tasha to remove Jason from Odyssey permanently, and she goes to bring her car around while Jason pauses to say goodbye to the lake.

Jason notices a sophisticated model boat moving without a nearby operator. Grady approaches him just as the boat's tiny guns turn toward them. The weapons fire drugged darts, knocking both Jason and Grady unconscious. The Whisperer's men carry them away and launch a large unmanned helicopter as a decoy.

Carson finds Grady missing and demands answers from Tasha. Government agents track the helicopter while Whit explains that Jason's intelligence work has made him a target. Carson learns that the fugitive known as the Whisperer is probably responsible, but he questions why a criminal seeking revenge would take an innocent child.

In a hidden cabin, the Whisperer awakens Jason. Revenge is only part of his plan. He wants Applesauce, an old computer program powerful enough to give its owner enormous control. Jason mocks him and claims the program is obsolete, but the Whisperer threatens to use an electrified cane on Grady.

To protect the boy, Jason agrees to lead the criminals to Applesauce. His condition is that Grady remain unharmed. The Whisperer accepts - but insists that Grady accompany them, keeping the child close as leverage against every trick Jason may attempt.
