The Imagination Station, Revisited

The grand opening of Whit's rebuilt Imagination Station is still a day away, but Kelly can't wait - she sneaks in early and steps through its doors into Jerusalem, just as Jesus rides into the city. There she befriends Josiah, a blind boy praying for a miracle, whose father Xerial is a temple priest convinced Jesus will bring Rome's wrath down on them all. Hidden in a closet, Kelly overhears Caiaphas and the religious leaders plotting that one man must die to save the nation... and when she's caught, she's swept along to the temple itself. There Jesus heals Josiah's eyes before the astonished crowd - and even Xerial's heart begins to change. But when Kelly rushes to warn Jesus of the plot, Judas cuts her off, hurries back to strike his secret bargain with the high priest, and has her locked away. Freed by the Station and reunited with Josiah, Kelly makes it to the upper room where Jesus and his disciples share their last supper, yet her courage fails her. As they head for Gethsemane, she turns back, determined to warn him one last time.

On the night before Whit unveils his rebuilt Imagination Station, Kelly sneaks inside to avoid the expected opening-day lines. The new machine sends travelers through doors and changes their clothing to fit each setting. Kelly asks it to choose an adventure and steps into Jerusalem as Jesus enters the city.

Kelly meets Josiah, a blind boy who hopes Jesus will heal him. She guides him toward the road, where crowds welcome Jesus as Messiah. Temple priests push through the people and object to the praise, while Jesus refuses to silence it. One of the priests is Josiah's father, Xerial.

Josiah brings Kelly home and offers to pay her for guiding him. Xerial fears Jesus will provoke Rome and bring punishment on the nation. He dismisses the reported miracles, but Josiah holds to the hope that Jesus can restore his sight. Kelly does not yet call herself a follower; she says she might believe if she saw a miracle.

Another door places Kelly inside a closet during a meeting of Caiaphas, Annas, Xerial, and other religious leaders. They discuss Lazarus's return to life, the people's belief in Jesus, and the danger they think he presents. Caiaphas argues that one man should die rather than risk the whole nation, while Xerial urges them to speak with Jesus first.

The leaders discover Kelly and assume she is Jesus' spy. News arrives that Jesus is driving merchants from the temple, and the priests rush there. Because Xerial has argued for a meeting, Caiaphas orders him to take Kelly to Jesus with a final warning that the high priest expects an explanation.

At the temple, Josiah presses toward Jesus in the crowd. Xerial tries to stop him, but Josiah asks to become a child of light. Jesus calls him forward and tells him to open his eyes. Josiah sees his father and Kelly for the first time. The miracle softens Xerial, who apologizes for doubting his son's faith.

Kelly remembers that the leaders plan to kill Jesus and tries to warn him. Judas intercepts her, identifies himself as a trusted disciple, and asks for the priests' message. Instead of telling Jesus, he has Kelly guide him back to the temple. He begins making secret arrangements with the high priest and has Kelly locked away so she cannot reveal them.

The Imagination Station carries Kelly through another door to Josiah's storeroom. She tells him that Judas is helping Caiaphas. They reach the house where Jesus and the disciples are sharing a meal, and Kelly helps carry bread and wine upstairs. Jesus knows her name without being told, but her nervousness keeps her from warning him.

When the disciples prepare to leave for Gethsemane, Kelly is frightened that they are walking straight into danger. Josiah says the others already know the priests are hostile, yet Kelly believes they do not understand Judas's betrayal. She turns back, determined to try once more.
