Inside, they pull a tarp off a valuable-looking painting and knock over paint cans, splattering it. Caught by Whit and sentenced to a month of cleaning, they're sure they've destroyed a priceless original - until Whit reveals the artist was five years old, and the room's true treasures are the photos, cards, and keepsakes from all the kids in his life. Aubrey Shepard arrives at Whit’s End already frustrated by her family’s limited money and her hand-me-down shoes. Lisa Mulligan tells her about a mysterious new room that Whit has kept closed while he works inside. Rumors claim that it contains rare paintings, golden sculptures, archaeological treasures, or stacks of cash. Eugene warns the girls that greed is never satisfied, but their curiosity only grows.

Aubrey imagines how easy life would be if she possessed Whit’s supposed fortune. She pictures servants completing her schoolwork, washing her golden bicycle, adjusting her pillows, and even removing Bethany whenever her little sister becomes annoying. Soon she and Lisa are no longer content to imagine the treasure. They begin searching for a way into the room.

Their disguises, distractions, and offers to clean the hallway all fail. At last Aubrey brings a lock-picking kit, only for Lisa to discover that the door has never been locked. The girls slip inside and find what appears in the darkness to be a valuable painting. While pulling away a tarp, Lisa knocks over several paint cans and splashes fresh paint across it.

Whit catches them and makes them confess to their parents. Their punishment is to clean Whit’s End for a month, but the girls fear they will spend their entire lives paying for the ruined work. Whit calls the painting a priceless original, then identifies the artist as Mandy Straussberg, who gave it to him when she was five years old.

Whit reveals the finished portion of the room. Its walls are covered with photographs, cards, names, and keepsakes from the many children who have come into his life. These are his true treasures, worth far more to him than gold or museum art. He forgives Aubrey and Lisa, although their cleaning punishment remains. Aubrey leaves understanding that wealth cannot equal the value of the people God has placed in her life - even an exasperating little sister.
