Court is in session at Whit's End. In the case of Morton vs. Rathbone, a kids' court has gathered to settle who owns a plastic bag stuffed with two thousand dollars. Eugene Meltsner presides as judge, Connie Kendall serves as bailiff, Whit acts as lawyer for Isaac Morton, and Bart Rathbone argues for his son Rodney.
On the witness stand, Isaac tells his story. Three months earlier, he talked Lucy Cunningham-Schultz into helping him find the overgrown path to the old Gower Barn, where he hoped to gather wood for a fort. Lucy pointed him toward the barn but turned back, and as Isaac hiked on alone he tripped over a plastic bag filled with money. Whit persuaded him to report the find to the police, who told him that if no one claimed the property within ninety days, it would be his. Isaac waited out the ninety slowest days of his life - only to arrive at the police station and learn that someone had claimed the money minutes earlier. That someone is Rodney Rathbone, and Captain O'Ryan has agreed to let this unusual trial decide the rightful owner.
Bart proves a slippery courtroom opponent. He badgers Isaac into admitting he doesn't like Rodney, and Rodney testifies that he saved the money for a whole year and hid it under the boards at the Gower Barn to buy a motorbike - and since Isaac once rescued Rodney when the barn collapsed on him, Isaac knew right where it was. Then Bart springs a surprise witness: Connie. After reminding the court how Rodney once humiliated Isaac with a phony love note in front of everyone, Bart forces Connie to admit under oath that Isaac said he'd like to get back at Rodney. During the recess, Connie realizes she told her mother about the money, which may be how the Rathbones learned every detail.
Eugene, bound to follow the evidence, rules in favor of Rodney, who smugly heads off to buy his motorbike. Isaac is crushed, and even Whit's gentle reminder that God promises justice will prevail - "Be sure your sins will find you out" - can't lift his spirits. Then Connie rushes in with the radio blaring. Reporter Brad Hinkley announces that Bart and Rodney are under police investigation after trying to buy a motorbike with counterfeit money. Rodney isn't worried, though - his pop proved the money belonged to him, so it should be easy to prove it doesn't.
