The Highest Stakes

Carson McKay has paid off the last of his gambling debts - or so he thinks - and after six months away, he shows up in Odyssey hoping to win back his family. His daughter Samantha is overjoyed, but his wife Kristi won't even let him in the door, and young Grady sneaks off to Carson's motel demanding to know why he ever left. Slowly, Carson starts to prove himself: an envelope of repair-shop earnings, a ride home when Grady falls sick at school, a fixed alternator, and no demands in return. Kristi thaws enough to invite him for burgers, where Carson plays pinball with his son and even meets Wooton, the friend who filled his empty place - and for one evening, the McKays feel like a family again. Then the phone rings. The lender Wilson has found a second debt under a borrowed name, a far bigger one, due Friday... and Carson quietly promises to find the money without telling his family a thing.

Carson McKay pays a dangerous lender named Wilson everything he believes he owes. He has stayed away from gambling for six months and wants to reclaim his family. Certain that his debts are finally behind him, he travels to Odyssey.

Grady has stopped attending church activities even though he has been asking serious questions about following Jesus. Wooton's estrangement from his own father has convinced Grady that becoming a Christian could divide him from his mother, who distrusts some of what he has learned at Whit's End. He lies about being busy rather than explain his fear.

When Grady and Samantha arrive home, they find Carson waiting outside. Samantha joyfully welcomes her father, but Grady is suspicious and Kristi refuses to let Carson into the apartment. She has heard his promises before and will not expose the children to another disappointment.

Grady secretly rides to Carson's motel for answers. Carson admits that a gambling addiction consumed the family's savings and rent money. He remembers six-year-old Grady stealing school money in an attempt to help the struggling family, and says he left because he believed his presence was teaching and causing more harm. Now he says he has quit gambling and wants to make amends.

Carson gives Grady an envelope for Kristi. It contains money he has earned by repairing cars, along with a note promising that more repayment will follow. Kristi cannot yet trust him, but the money and his new mechanical skill suggest that at least some of his claims may be true.

When Grady becomes sick at school and no one can reach Kristi, he calls Carson. Carson brings him home, waits outside until Kristi returns, and repairs her broken alternator. He does not use the favor to force his way back into the household. Kristi remains cautious but begins to see that he is trying.

Carson quietly watches Grady's soccer game from a distant hill. Kristi notices him and invites him to join the family for burgers afterward. Samantha is delighted, while Grady struggles with the reminders that Wooton has filled some of the fatherly role Carson abandoned. Carson wants to meet the man who has cared for his children.

At Burger World, Wooton welcomes Carson and invites the family to visit his unusual house. Carson plays pinball with Grady, and for a short time the McKays feel like a family again. Then Wilson calls. Carson had borrowed under another name as well, and the lender demands a much larger payment by Friday. Trapped by a debt he thought was settled, Carson promises to find the money without telling his family.
