Liz Horton wakes to Belgian waffles and the joyful news that it is her birthday. At school, the class ends math early to celebrate with her favorite chocolate cake and ice cream. That evening, her friends bring lime-green clothes, music, concert tickets, and even a tiny sweater that Alex mistakenly bought for her turtle. Delighted by the attention, Liz wishes that every day could be her birthday.
The next morning begins exactly the same way. Liz soon realizes that her wish has come true: her mother serves the same breakfast, her teacher gives the same announcement, Alex tells the same joke, and everyone gives her the same presents. At first Liz enjoys knowing what will happen, but day after day of identical parties and rich desserts quickly becomes exhausting.
Liz tries to break the pattern. She refuses breakfast, stays in bed, and finally disguises herself and hides beneath a park bench. Her family and classmates find her anyway and simply move the party to the park. When Eugene arrives to repeat his promise of a special gift waiting at Whit’s End, Liz desperately explains that she is trapped in the same birthday.
The scene suddenly disappears, and Liz finds herself with Whit inside the Room of Consequence. The repeated birthdays have been Eugene’s gift: a program allowing her to experience what would happen if her wish came true. Whit explains that a constant diet of fun is like a constant diet of cake. It may sound wonderful, but eventually it makes a person sick.
Liz emerges just in time for her real birthday celebration. When Eugene presents another serving of her favorite cake and ice cream, she panics until Whit ends the program once more. Liz is relieved to know that the repetition is truly over and that a special day remains special precisely because it does not last forever.
