Great Expectations

Emily Jones has always dreamed of becoming a judge - until a school project lands her in her father's courtroom, buried under legal briefs, case files, and a dispute over a woman's jewelry. Worn out and wondering if her dream was a mistake, she steps into the Imagination Station for a journey through Whit's own life. Behind door after door she meets a young John Whittaker with big plans... writing for National Geographic, fishing in Alaska, learning to fly. Then come a draft notice, a baby on the way, and a teaching career, and one by one the boyhood dreams give way to something better. Back in Odyssey, Emily finishes her project and finds the courage to tell Judge Jones she didn't enjoy a minute of it - and he assures her she must never let his dream become hers. As for Whit, he's off to the airport... because some old dreams can still take flight.

Whit discovers the life list that he and Jack made as boys, filled with dreams such as writing for National Geographic, finding the source of the Nile, and learning to fly. As he wonders where the years have gone, Emily Jones eagerly begins a school project in her father’s courtroom. She has always dreamed of becoming a judge, and Judge Simon Jones lets her study a dispute over whether an appraiser misrepresented the value of a woman’s jewelry.

Emily visits Joanne Allen for help understanding the appraisal process. Joanne reveals that she and Jack are retiring, closing their antique shop, and planning to travel, though they will keep a house in Odyssey. Jack is already in Scotland visiting long-lost relatives. Emily then buries herself in legal briefs and case files, only to discover that even her father considers this unusually heavy assignment one of his simpler cases.

Exhausted by the research, Emily admits to Whit that she hates the work and may not want to become a judge after all. Whit invites her into an Imagination Station program he has created from his journals and old life list. Moving through a series of doors, Emily visits different stages of Whit’s life while the people in the adventure accept her as someone who belongs there.

First she meets young John Avery Whittaker, who dreams of fly-fishing in Alaska, writing for National Geographic, traveling widely, and piloting airplanes. A few years later, she watches him prepare a promising article - only to receive a military draft notice. After his service, a journalism scholarship offers him another path, but other opportunities and responsibilities compete for his attention.

In Whit’s first apartment, he is finally preparing for flight school when Jenny announces that they are expecting a baby. Later, Emily meets him in McAlister Park after he has left a fourteen-year teaching career. Many childhood ambitions remain unfinished, yet Whit explains that dreams naturally change as circumstances, priorities, and God’s direction reshape a life. Marriage, children, writing, publishing, and teaching have mattered far more to him than checking every item off a boyhood list.

Returning to Whit’s End, Emily realizes that she does not need to settle her entire future at once. A dream may demand hard work, may not fit a person’s abilities, or may give way to something more important. She still completes her assignment, reaching the same judgment her father plans to deliver, but she honestly tells him that she did not enjoy the work. Simon assures her that he will be proud whatever calling she chooses and that she must not let his dream become hers.

Simon buys Emily an antique judge’s gavel to celebrate her excellent work, leaving her free to think and pray about what comes next. Meanwhile, Whit acts on one old dream that need not remain in the past. Joanne tells them that he has gone to the airport to begin flying lessons.
