Jerry Whittaker

Jerry Whittaker was the son of John Avery Whittaker, known as Whit, and his wife Jenny, and a brother to Jason and Jana. A gifted athlete in his youth, he was known for his encouragement. When young Jason kept failing at the high jump, Jerry told him plainly, "I believe in you." After receiving his draft notice, an old friend dared him to flee to Canada by boat. Jerry spent a night in honest prayer and stayed, choosing to serve even though he was afraid. He died in Vietnam months later, killed while protecting others. His last gifts reached home only around and after the news of his death, among them a postcard to Jason and a handmade clock. His memory remains precious to his family, especially Whit.
