Trio
Challenge Part 1

Cryin'
Bryan Dern's face lit up on the monitors that had been
placed before the contestants as he sported a goofy looking
beret that looked lopsided on his misshapen head. The nine remaining
players had been divided up into three teams of three earlier
that morning, and each team had been taken to a separate location
where they were told to await further instruction from the host.
The time had come for the contestants to discover what their
next challenge was going to be.
"Bonjour Contestants", Dern said as he adjusted
his beret, "And welcome to the trio challenge. As I'm
sure you've already noticed, you've been divided
up into three different teams. I sure hope you get along with
these people because you are going to need to co-operate if
you're going to win any money at all." The camera
on Dern panned back to reveal a backdrop of a small French village
somewhere in the heart of France. "As you can see, I'm
standing in this beautiful village known as Juillac. Your job
is simple. Find me and win $25,000 for the group pot. If all
three teams find this location before 5:00 tonight, $75,000
will be added to the group pot. As usual however, there is a
catch. The method and ways in which you decide to hunt me out
will vary greatly between the three groups. Robert Mitchell,
Barry Muntz, and Connie Kendall. You three see that old beat
up utility van parked just outside your location? Well that
baby is going to be yours to use in your quest to find Juillac.
However, not only are you the furthest away from my present
location, but you won't find any maps in the van to help
you find your way. To make matters worse, you've been
given only a small ration of money that you are to use wisely
if you hope to reach me before the 5:00 deadline. You will be
known as Team A"
Connie, Barry, and Mitch looked at each and sighed. They then
returned their attention to the screen in front of them as Bryan
Dern addressed the next group.
"Richard Maxwell, Jason Whittaker, and Arthur Dent. I'm
sure you've noticed by now the two bicycles and a scooter
resting over near that fence down there. That's going
to be your means of travel for this competition. And while you
are lot closer then Team A, you also have directions to Juillac.
However, the directions are written entirely in French so I
hope one of you knows how to read it. Otherwise your only hope
is to try and find someone who does. You could always take some
wild guesses too if you'd like, but hey, it's your
call. We're also givin' ya a small but reasonable
amount of money. You can do whatever you'd like with it.
You will be known as Team B."
The newly formed Team B looked back at their modes of transportation
and shook their heads. "It could be worse", Jason
offered, "But I'm not sure how."
"Well that brings us to Team C", Bryan Dern began,
"Eugene Meltsner, Monica Stone, and Jack Allen. You guys
see what you're going to be using for transportation?
No? Well maybe you should look a little harder. Still nothing?
I'll give you a hint. See those sticks on the ground?
Yeah. Those are your walking sticks. You three are going to
be walking the entire distance to my location, tough there are
some advantages to your situation. You have a map written in
English with the actual location highlighted for you somewhere
inside. You're also by far the closet group there is and
should have no difficulty finding me by the deadline. The game
officially begins the moment this satellite connection is terminated.
I wish you nine the best of luck and hope to see you all at
the finish line. Oh, who am I kidding? My favorite part of this
game is watching you guys suffer. Good bye!" The screen
then flashed and dissolved into black. The game had begun.
Team A immediately walked over to the van and took a look inside.
It was empty except for two seats in the front and a middle
seat that looked like it had been a scratching post for some
large, wild animal. The backseat of the van had been removed,
and the front window shield came complete with a weblike crack
that sprawled across the entire viewing area. A set of keys
was already setting in the ignition, and a radio displayed the
current time: 12:07 pm. They had just under 5 hours to find
Bryan Dern. "What a piece of junk", Barry said preparing
to kick the tire, then thought better of the idea and realized
the van might collapse at any moment. "On second thought,
at least we've got wheels."
Mitch offered to drive the van and both Connie and Barry agreed.
Connie buckled into the passenger seat and Barry sat in the
middle where his only means of keeping him in place was by grabbing
hold of a handle bar that was positioned above his head. The
three decided their best bet would not to be to necessarily
find Juillac right off the bat, but to find a gas station where
they would be able to hopefully purchase a map to aid them.
Mitch yanked the parking brake and put the gear in drive. He
then pushed hard on the gas and felt the van lurch forward and
stop. The van had stalled. He turned the keys in the ignition
again and watched as the radio brightened and dimmed with every
rumble the van made. After several seconds, the van sparked
back to life. "Great, just great!" Connie said throwing
her hands in the air, "If this van dies on us before we
reach Juillac, then we're not only going to lose out on
$25,000, but we're going to be spending the night in the
middle of nowhere!" Mitch laughed and grabbed Connie's
hand, "It'll be ok" he insisted, and then
put his hands back on the wheel. "Now… let's
go!"
*****
Jason
rubbed his hand over the seat of the bike and wiped the sweat
from his brow. The sun was hot, very hot, and neither Jason
nor Arthur Dent were dressed for this kind of weather. Richard
on the other hand was wearing a flowery Hawaiian shirt and a
pair of khaki shorts. And in a very strange turn of events,
he had also managed to smuggle a water bottle with him when
the crew had come to take the contestants to their private locations.
"Guess I lucked out, ‘eh boys?" Richard smiled
and passed the water bottle around the threesome, "Be
careful though. We have no idea how far from our destination
we are and it could be hours before we get there. Any one got
any idea what time it is?" Jason glanced at his watch
and informed him it was shortly after twelve o'clock.
"Great!" Richard said with a hint of sarcasm, "five
hours and counting. Who wants the scooter?" Arthur Dent
looked at Jason and then back at Richard. Jason looked at the
ground. "Alright, I'll do it", Richard smirked,
"But only for the first bit. I think it'll be in
our best interest to alternate at some point in time."
The three agreed and boarded their respective transports.
"Do you have the directions?" Arthur Dent asked
as he strapped on his helmet.
"Sure do Dent", Jason answered back, "Let's
go down the hill a bit and stop off at that encampment a couple
miles to the south. I don't speak much French, but hopefully
some of the locals can help us out with these words."
The three then set off on their journey to find Cryin'
Bryan Dern.
Team C sat down at bench and spread the map out. Dern's
information seemed correct in that the location they were looking
for was highlighted, but unfortunately for them, their own location
was a bit of a mystery and the map was absolutely useless without
knowing where they were currently positioned. Eugene climbed
on top of the bench and looked around. "I don't
see any landmarks I'm afraid. The only visible reference
points I can deduce would be the vast range of rolling hills
in this side of France."
Jack looked at the elevation chart on the map. "No good
here anyway Eugene. France is filled with rolling hills and
valleys. We're not going to get much help from this."
Monica pulled out a pair of binoculars from her bag and stood
on the bench beside Eugene. "Looks like there is a town
just over the horizon there. I'd say, oh, about a two
hour walk from here. But if you ask me, it's the only
thing we've got to go on. When we get there we can get
a good idea where we are and then set out accordingly. Everyone
up for the hike?" Eugene and Jack reluctantly loaded on
their bags and grabbed their walking sticks. The clock was ticking,
but they had several more hours to go before the deadline would
be reached.
*****
"Push
harder!" Mitch yelled out of the driver side window to
Connie and Barry, "I almost had it!" The van had
entered a muddy roadway that was the result of heavy rainfall
two evenings before, and Team A not only found themselves in
the middle of nowhere, but without any hope or any idea how
they were going to get to Juillac.
"It's no use Robert", Barry said trying to
catch his breath, "This piece of junk is going nowhere
fast."
"Wait a second!" Connie yelled excitedly as she
raced into the middle of the roadway, "There's a
car approaching! Maybe they can help us out!" She waved
her arms wildly in the air as the car pulled over and parked
next to the sorry looking threesome. The driver rolled down
his window and looked out at Connie who was now standing next
to his car. "Bonjour!" Connie said and then pointed
to the van stuck in the mud, "Help. Needed." The
driver looked puzzled and looked over at his passenger who was
equally confused. Connie tried a different approach. She pointed
to the men and then made a pushing motion with her hands. The
driver still shook his head but the passenger leaned over and
whispered into the driver's ear. The driver then nodded
his head and smiled. Connie then ran back to the van as the
two men stepped out of their vehicle and came to join her. Barry,
Connie, and the two strangers then positioned themselves behind
the van and pushed with as much force as they could. Mitch stepped
hard on the gas and after several seconds of frustration, the
van climbed over the patch of mud and on to a drier plane of
road.
Connie, Mitch, and Barry thanked the two men who had stopped
for them and then waved them goodbye as their car pulled away.
The trio then climbed back into the van and began to drive away.
A minute or so later, the gang felt the van pull sharply to
the right and drag them into a ditch on the side of the road.
Once the commotion was over, Connie turned to Barry and then
looked back at Mitch. "Did what I think just happened,
really just happen?"
"I'm afraid so Connie." Mitch said shaking
his head, "We've got ourselves a flat tire."
*****
Meanwhile,
Jason, Arthur, and Richard were racing down the hillside and
making great time on their bikes in the process. They arrived
at the encampment they had spotted from their start point and
found a local who was willing to translate the directions for
them, if they offered to pay a small fee. Despite Dent's
protest, Maxwell handed the man a few coins and was soon given
a chart with the fastest route that would get them to Juillac
hours before their five o'clock deadline. Jason, Arthur,
and Richard looked at each other and smiled. "Looks like
we'll earn that $25,000 for the group after all."
After
they left the encampment, Jason swapped positions with Richard
on the scooter, and the three decided to discuss what their
next step would be. "If you ask me", Jason said
sipping the recently refilled water bottle from Richard, "We
probably want to be the first ones to arrive at Juillac. I hate
to admit it, but I'm really not sure who the mole is.
And if we are the first to arrive, there's a good possibility
Bryan Dern will offer the three of us an exemption. I don't
know about you two, but I want it."
"Just
vote for me on the test dear Jason", Arthur Dent said
with a crazy grin, "You can't go wrong if you vote
for the mole!"
Richard
shook his head. "Look Dent, you might be the mole, but
that's beside the point. How do we know Dern will offer
the exemption to the first team to arrive? This game is unpredictable.
We never know what to expect next from one minute till the next.
If you ask me, I say we find some place to eat and get some
food. That fella already told us that we're going to arrive
way before the five o'clock deadline. What's the
rush? I think we can get a leg up on the competition if we put
food in our bellies. What do you say?"
Jason
argued that it would be a waste of their time since the production
company would be feeding them supper anyway. But after Mr. Dent,
who had been complaining of hunger the entire trek, reasoned
that missing lunch would hurt the others and only help them,
the three decided food would be their number one priority. "After
all", Dent stated, "We've been given money
we clearly won't be needing!" The three agreed and
went on their way.
*****
Team
C was having an uneventful challenge so far. Eugene was keeping
Monica and Jack Allen entertained with facts and tidbits that
served only the purpose of passing the time away, but other
then that, the day had been pretty dull. The town they had decided
they would be heading towards was still nearly an hour walking
distance away and the hike was not only boring, but very, very
hot. Jack had taken off his shirt and wrapped it around his
head as a way to shield his eyes from the sun, and Eugene had
even decided to remove his trademark vest and store it in his
backpack. Monica was dressed in white and wasn't absorbing
as much sun as her fellow companions, but she too was wishing
they had water or some sort of refreshment to help them in their
walk. Suddenly Jack let out a yell.
"What
is it?" Monica asked turning to look behind her. She at
first didn't see Jack, but then saw a body on the side
of the pathway holding a leg. "Jack! Are you alright?"
Eugene
rushed towards Jack and threw his backpack on the ground. They
had been given a first aid kit incase any of them ran into an
emergency and Eugene was the one carrying it.
"It's
my bad leg." Jack said between groans, "I think
I twisted it on the path. I'll be fine though."
Monica
pulled a handkerchief out of her pack and wiped the sweat from
Jack's body while Eugene attached a small foot brace to
Jack's left leg. After a few minutes, Monica turned to
Eugene.
"I
want you to continue making your way to the town", she
said holding Jack's head up, "Hopefully you can
make it there and back in under a half hour. Then we can figure
out where we are and pinpoint our location on the map. We'll
use that as a reference point, and if Jack is feeling up to
it, we'll figure out which direction we need to go to
get to Juillac."
Eugene,
who was clearly drained of energy, looked down at Jack and realized
he didn't have much of a choice. "I'll certainly
do my best Ms. Stone... And Mr. Allen, please feel better."
Eugene then slipped his backpack back on and turned to continue
the walk towards the town.

Challenge Part 2

"Can
you pass me that bolt?" Barry asked Connie as he finished
tightening the van's spare wheel. Connie passed him what
he wanted and watched as Barry finished securing the spare onto
the vehicle and then roll the other tire into the back of the
van. The two then climbed back into the broken down vehicle
and waited for Mitch to return; who had ran a few miles north
towards a gas station the group could see on the horizon.
"So, ah, Barry." Connie began, feeling rather uncomfortable
being alone with the same person who had once stolen plans for
the Imagination Station, "You used to work for Andromeda?"
"That I did", Barry said shaking his head, "I
did a lot of their dirty work. I used to be into corporate espionage
you know?"
"You don't say?" Connie replied, even though
she had already heard it from Whit. "Do you have any regrets?"
"Well, Connie, I'll be honest with you. I worked
alongside Andromeda for one reason, and one reason only: The
Chairman. I truly admire that man. He's a great mind and
has great ideas, and I just felt so much greatness flow from
him whenever I was around him."
"I get the idea", Connie said with a smile, "Your
boss was great. So what?"
"It was more then that Connie" Barry said with a
sad look in his eyes, "He had the ability to motivate
people. No matter who you were, he was the guy we wanted to
impress. And when I was asked personally to work with him on
Operation Think Tank, I could hardly believe it. I mean, I was
in South America at the time and when word spread that the plans
I took from your boss were incomplete, I thought for sure I
was done for! But the Chairman, well, he just came out to bat
for me. He brought me back to Chicago and offered me a second
chance."
"You mean to make sure the second brainwash attempt was
a success?" Connie asked.
"Sorta", Barry began, "They knew I had done
some work with computers and I had already figured out how to
use the Station. They wanted to use it to actually upload the
technology to the satellites. My job was to configure the thing
to do it, and it worked. Unfortunately, your boss got in our
way again."
"I hope I don't sound rude", Connie said sheepishly,
"But why aren't you in jail right now?"
Barry scratched his forehead and smirked. "The Chairman's
a powerful man. He can keep anyone out of jail."
Connie grew curious. "What about Mr. Charles? Why isn't
he out of prison?"
Barry smiled. "Let's just say The Chairman wasn't
pleased with Bennett's numerous fumbles and failed plots.
We both think jail time will serve him some good. But that doesn't
mean I got off scotch-free either. In fact, I'm in the
process of making it up to the Chairman right now."
"What do you mean?" Connie said, "In the process?'"
Barry
looked out the window. "Your boyfriend's back. I
sure hope he got that map."
Mitch opened the driver's side door and shook his head.
"Well there was a gas station alright. But it wasn't
open. Which means the only way I could've got a map was
to break in and steal one."
Connie got very serious and looked at Mitch. "So we're
stuck here in the middle of nowhere? I can't believe this!"
"Well, maybe", Mitch said smiling, "But I
did get a chance to talk with some kids who were playing nearby.
The oldest one spoke enough English to understand me, and pointed
me in the direction we'll need to go. I think he said
something about seeing the signs that should take us right to
it. As long as Barry got that tire fixed, I think this challenge
is as good as wrapped up."
Barry folded his arms over his chest and smiled. "Of course
I got that tire fixed. I'm really good with my hands I'll
have you know." Mitch smiled and then grabbed the steering
wheel. "Let's get moving!"
*****
Arthur
and Richard climbed off their bikes, while Jason got off his
scooter, and walked toward the "Seau Sale". The
sign hanging above the door indicated the "Seau Sale"
was a restaurant, but from every other indication, the three
felt they had been poorly misled. A twenty-something waitress
guided the team to a table at the far corner of the room and
poured each of them a glass of a brownish yellow liquid that
seemed like it was meant to be water. Jason soon found out the
waitress also didn't speak a word of English, which made
ordering their meals quite difficult. But after several minutes
of pointing and gestures, the waitress left the three alone
as they decided to talk strategy.
Richard was the first one to speak up. "Ok guys, I've
got a bit of a confession to make. I'm not the mole."
"Of course you aren't Richard!" Dent said
with a crazy grin.
Jason cut him before he could finish. "Ya, ya Dent…
you are. I think you've made that perfectly clear. What's
your point Richard?"
"Well, I think us three should stick together. Form a
coalition if you will."
Jason shifted in his seat. He didn't want the others to
know about his secret alliance with Monica, otherwise he would
be forced to reveal evidence they had discovered about the mole
and her identity. "Look Richard, I really appreciate the
offer. But I'm just not up for it."
Dent blew into his straw and made the brownish yellow liquid
form bubbles. He then looked up when he realized Jason and Richard
were both looking at him. "Well count me out gentlemen.
I would be of no help to you."
"Yes you would be!" Richard replied, "We can
use you as bait. We could put our heads together and figure
out who the mole is then use you or Jason as a decoy. We make
it seem like one of you is the mole and then get the others
to fall for it. Then, when all is said in done we're in
the final three! One of us will be guaranteed the money and
we could split it at the end. How ‘bout it?"
Jason shook his head. "No deal Maxwell. I just wouldn't
feel right doing it."
Arthur shook his head as well. "I agree with Mr. Whittaker.
This is simply something that would be wrong and against the
rules. We could get in serious trouble with the producer if
we did this.
Richard took a sip of the liquid that sat before him and then
rubbed his lips dry. "Suit yourselves. I just thought
we were in this for the money."
*****
Eugene continued walking toward the small town that Monica,
Jack and him had set out to reach before Jack had fallen and
twisted his leg. Now it was up to Eugene to reach the town alone,
and get a good idea where they would need to go if they were
ever to reach the town of Julliac before the five o'clock
deadline. The only thing Eugene was able to do to keep himself
focused and stop thinking about the intense heat was to talk
with himself. Something he didn't like to do, but often,
when alone, found himself doing.
"Well Mr. Meltsner, look what you've got yourself
into. You signed up for this expedition to break away from the
monotony and redundancy of living in seclusion. Now look at
you. Once again you find yourself alone and isolated, participating
in a trivial contest where contestants are asked to analyze
even the most minute details of every day occurrences and conclude,
while in most cases incorrectly, who the traitor is. Now you
find Mr. Allen, a father figure for most, incapacitated on the
side of a French road. He may be elderly, but he is certainly
not in a poor health and I find it difficult to believe he just
happened to pull a muscle or twist his leg on something as basic
as a hike. This leads one to suspect that he could very well
be the mole in our little entourage. Then there's Ms.
Stone, a former criminal who spent a great deal of time hunting
me down to steal what I had worked so hard to research! She
sends me on this absurd adventure to pinpoint our whereabouts,
when I'm clearly dehydrated and lacking my full mental
abilities under this intense heat. I mean look at me? I'm
talking to myself! I never talk to myself! Well, that certainly
isn't true. I suppose I have been known on occasion to
converse inwardly. But it's certainly not a habit I would
admit to, nor one that I feel should be brought to the attention
of others. Indeed… Mr. Meltsner, Concentrate! It's
time to think about the game; Traitors, saboteurs, spies, double
agents, and moles! Who can it be? Mr. Maxwell is definitely
a top suspect, as is his newfound acquaintance Mr. Mitchell.
Jason Whittaker certainly has the background for such a title,
and Mr. Muntz as well. Dent lacks the mental control to really
do any damage in this game and I know Connie too well to really
believe she is capable of such a monumental task. That leaves
me with only one more individual. Is it possible that I am the
mole! Who would suspect the resident genius to orchestrate corruption
and espionage in a contest where brains are vital to success?
I am the mole! Do you hear me? I am the mole! Wait! What are
you saying? Concentrate! You're beginning to sound like
Mr. Dent! He is the one who claims to be the mole. But clearly
he cannot! Since I am the traitor…. The sabateour…
the spy… the double agent… the mole! Do you hear
me world? I am the Mole!"
Suddenly without notice, Eugene collapsed onto the dusty road
of the French countryside. The heat had finally taken it's
toll.
Trio
Challenge Part 3
Wednesday, September 12, 2002
Team
A's van pulled into Juillac at five past four.
After Mitch, Connie and Barry had gotten past the
initial difficulties with the van, they were able
to use the directions from locals and signs along
the way to reach their destination. Bryan Dern greeted
them and informed them that $25,000 had been added
to the pot.
"So we're the first to arrive? Does
this mean we get an exemption or something?"
Connie asked excitedly.
"Who said you're the first to arrive?"
Dern replied with a hint of arrogance, "Team
B arrived nearly 2 hours ago. They're in the
lodge playing pool. However, who said we'd
give the exemption to the first team that arrived?
In fact the only people who will be exempt are those
that do not make it in time. You know, to make it
fair." Dern smiled. "I hope you've
figured out who the mole is ‘cause as the
numbers get smaller, the questions on the test get
harder."
Barry swallowed hard. "Well let's hope
I'm right."
Team B greeted Team A as they were lead into the
lodge. "Hey guys", Jason said scanning
the group, "So I guess Monica wasn't
in your team, was she?"
"Nope, she must have been on the walking crew."
Dent quickly scanned the people assembled. "So
that means Eugene, Monica and Mr. Allen make up
the final team. They have not yet arrived, have
they?"
"Nope, we have no idea where they are".
Dern called out, "We figured they would be
the first team to arrive since they were practically
a stone's throw away. But guess they went
in the wrong direction. Odder still is the fact
their camera crew hasn't checked in with us,
and we can't get a hold of them. Really strange
stuff. They've still got forty-five minutes
though. When time expires, then it's time
to get worried."
Connie already looked worried. "I sure hope
they're alright. It's really hot out
there! They don't have the luxury of being
sheltered from it like we were in the van."
"I wouldn't call it a luxury Connie",
Mitch said smiling, "That piece of junk was
a curse."
"I'm sure there's nothing to worry
about", Richard interjected, "The mole
probably just found a real great way to sabotage
this one."
The six contestants decided the only course of action
they could take would be to wait till the time expired.
Once that occurred, they would figure out what to
do next.
*****
An
hour and a half later, Jason paced back and forth
outside of the lodge. They had waited long enough,
and the final team had still not reached Juillac.
"Dear Lord, please help them to be alright."
He said out loud, "I need them to be alright."
Inside, Richard sat drinking a cup of coffee and
playing cards with Mr. Dent. "You think they're
going to get here eventually?"
"I highly doubt it." Arthur said as
he displayed his cards for Richard, "I win
again."
Richard smirked. "Dent. You lost again. You
ever get tired of acting like this?"
Dent looked confused. "Acting like what?"
Connie and Mitch were in the corner of the lodge
curled up near a fireplace. Like Jason, they too
were praying for Eugene, Monica, and Jack's
safety. Suddenly Barry came bursting into the room.
"Isn't anyone going to do anything?"
Barry asked looking around, "Your friends
are missing and you're here playing cards
and warming yourselves by the fire? How can you
just sit idly by?"
"We are doing something", Mitch said
from the fireplace, "We're putting it
in God's hands."
Barry shook his head. "If you believe in that,
then that's fine. But you can't expect
God to just swoop down and bring them here. It doesn't
help anything to be passive right now… we've
got to take action!"
Dent closed his eyes, "I feel them drawing
closer. They are approaching. Fast. Slow. And then…
fast again. They are weak. And now they are strong.
They are weak again."
Richard laughed and threw his cards at Dent. "Knock
it off", he said smiling, "Barry do
whatever you want. You won't get any objections
from us."
Barry looked around the room again and shook his
head. "Alright, I'm going after them."
He walked to Richard's table, grabbed his
water bottle, went out the front of the lodge, past
Jason, and into Team A's utility van parked
outside. Mitch had left the keys in the ignition,
so Barry climbed into the driver's seat and
started the vehicle. Several minutes later, Barry
and his van were traveling south of Juillac and
across the rolling hills of France.
Barry scanned the roads for any sign of life. A
few animals scurried about here and there, but there
were no signs of traffic or people in this side
of France. Barry began to wonder if he had gone
the wrong way. Earlier in the day, Dern had pointed
in the general direction where Team C had begun,
but it was such a wide area that he would have to
cover if he was going to find anyone. Suddenly Barry
caught site of a large, dead raccoon on the left
side of the road. He put on the parking brake and
got out of the car.
It wasn't a raccoon. It was Eugene Meltsner
rolled up into a ball. "Meltsner!" Barry
yelled as soon as he realized what he was looking
at, "What happened to you?"
"Wa-wa-wa", Eugene sputtered, "Wat—"
"Say no more Meltsner, I've got some
water in the car." Barry ran back to the vehicle
and brought out Richard's water bottle. "Here,
have as much as you need."
Eugene took the bottle with trembling hands and
put it to his dry, chapped lips. He took a gulp
and wiped his mouth clean. "Thank - thank
you." Eugene said licking his lips. "I
was beginning to get worried no one would find me."
"You're a lot closer to Juillac then
you think. It's only about a ten minute drive
from here." Barry then looked up and down
the roadways and turned back to Eugene. "Just
out of, you know, curiosity. Where's Stone
and Jack Allen?"
Eugene looked at the ground and tried to collect
his thoughts. "I'm afraid I have a hard
time recalling what occurred. Though, unless my
memory serves me incorrectly, I remember Jack Allen
twisting his leg. I believe I was then elected to
come discover what town lie just over the horizon,
thus pinpointing our location on the map."
"Well that part's easy", Barry
said smiling, "The town you guys were going
towards was your destination. You would have made
it in plenty of time."
Eugene sighed. "Apparently the heat caused
me to think irrationally and even hallucinate. I
don't remember much after that. I only recall
waking up a quarter of an hour ago, and realizing
I had no idea where I was."
Barry grabbed Eugene's bag and slung it over
his shoulder. He then grabbed Eugene's still
trembling hand and helped him to stand. He guided
his disoriented teammate to the van and then got
back into the driver's seat. "Well Meltsner,
we've got two more of your buddies to find.
Let's hope they're alright".
"Indeed." Eugene replied and took another
sip of the water bottle, "Indeed."

Jack Allen lay flat on his back on the side of the
road. His shirt was wrapped around his forehead
and his leg was wrapped up in a crude brace created
by Eugene. Suddenly Jack heard a car's engine
rumbling nearby and he rolled onto his side as he
wildly waved his hands in the air. The vehicle pulled
over and out walked Barry Muntz and Eugene Meltsner.
"Is this some sort of craze?" Barry
asked looking at Jack on the ground, "You
and Eugene pioneers for ditch sleeping?
Eugene chuckled and then walked over to Jack. "How's
your leg?"
Jack smiled, "I think it's much better
now. I haven't had to really do much walking.
But in any case, why are you with Barry and not
Monica?"
Barry's face dropped. "You mean you
don't know where Monica is?"
"Of course not!" Jack said as he slowly
lifted himself up into a standing position, "She
said she was going after you, Eugene. When you didn't
come back for us, she got all angry and said she
couldn't believe she sent the mole out alone.
The camera guys decided to follow her rather then
wait around with me, and since I was pretty banged
up, I decided to stay here and rest. Besides, I
know you're not the mole. I knew you'd
return eventually and didn't want you to head
back this way and never find anyone."
Eugene flashbacked to the moment before he fell
when he was screaming for the world to hear that
he was the mole. He chuckled to himself; if only
Jack could have seen him then.
"Well what do you we do know?" Barry
said impatiently standing next to the van, "Stone's
gone and we've got no way of finding her."
Suddenly a loud rumbling was heard in the sky and
the three men looked up to see a helicopter fast
approaching. The helicopter hovered near the three
and then set down in the middle of the road. Out
popped Bryan Dern, soon followed by Monica Stone.
"Well guys, we found Monica." Dern said
with a smile, "And it looks like Barry found
you two. So that's that. Game finished. You
guys failed to earn the $25,000 for the pot. But
you all earned yourself an exemption!"
Jack was unphased. "Ah Monica, where were
you?"
Monica got frustrated and walked over to Eugene.
"Meltsner!" She shouted, "How
dare you!"
Eugene adjusted his glasses. "I beg your pardon?"
Monica gritted her teeth. "You lost us the
money Eugene. We were right next to Juillac, and
you knew it! You just didn't want us to get
the $25,000. And here all this time I was thinking
you were a team player! I can't believe it!"
Eugene swallowed and looked back at Jack, then Dern,
and then Barry. He wasn't ready to admit the
fact he had fainted in the middle France. "My
apologies Ms. Stone. I'm truly sorry."
Monica starred at Eugene for several more seconds
and then stormed back to the helicopter. She turned
back to Jack. "You coming?" Jack hobbled
over to the copter and climbed in. Eugene looked
hurt and embarrassed standing in the middle of the
road as Barry walked up behind him. "I'll
take you back Eugene", Barry said with a reassuring
look, "Stone gets like that sometimes. It'll
pass, I know it will. But for now, it's best
to keep out of her way."
Eugene's focus was still on the ground in
front of him. "But she thinks I'm the
Mole Mr. Muntz! When have I ever not competed to
the best of my abilities in any of the challenges
we've been scheduled to perform?"
Barry, who once himself thought Eugene was the mole,
kept quiet. "Let's go back. I think
the others will be really happy to see you again."
Speculation
Week 4
Wednesday, September 12, 2002
Following
the Trio Challenge, the contestants of AIO Mole
sat down and talked with Cryin' Bryan Dern. They
shared their insight into things they have noticed
and information that might help in determining who
the mole is.
Richard: "Well my team made it,
didn't it? Hopefully that finally tells the others
that I'm not the mole. As for my own theories? It's
hard to tell. The whole Team C mixup seems very
suspicious and I would like to think it's because
the mole is one of those three. Monica, Eugene and
Jack have all done things that could be classified
as mole behavior. And earning an exemption could
throw suspicion off of one of them, if in fact they
are the mole. But that's the thing… they seem
to obvious. Today would have been a great day for
the mole to just blend in and let others mess up
for once."
Connie: "I've denied it to myself
for so long, but after today I really think it might
be possible. What it Mitch is the mole after all?
I mean he was AREM right under my nose for so long,
and I guess he's good at deception… but would
he really be the traitor and not tell me? I don't
know what to think. But what kind of gas station
is closed in the middle of the day? As if. And why
didn't he get out and push with Barry, when our
vehicle got stuck in the mud? Stalling for time?
I just pray Mitch isn't the mole… I want so
much to trust him."
Robert:
"Connie the mole? I hate to admit it, but the more
I spend time with her, the more I think it's a strong
possibility. Who would think Connie Kendall being
the saboteur? Not many. That's for sure. But I also
want to keep my eye on Monica. She was in the only
group that failed the trio challenge. She's also
done a lot of things I would consider mole-like.
But maybe, just maybe, the mole is Dent. I mean
the guy admits to it all the time… who's to
say he isn't telling the truth?"
Eugene: "I am seriously confused
as to what to think. Mr. Allen would be at the top
of my list of mole suspects, but after today, so
is Ms. Stone. Unfortunately many competitors are
beginning to take on that particular rodent's characteristics.
I just don't understand how Monica managed to get
lost, when she knew exactly which direction I had
headed. Something is amiss."
Monica: "I really ought to apologize
to Eugene, but I just don't get it. Jack and I sat
on the side of that road for what seemed like forever,
and Eugene never came back! I then go looking for
him, don't find him anywhere, and we end up losing
$25,000 for his disappearance. How can he expect
me to not think he's the mole?"
Jason: "Everyone's making a big
deal out of Team C's little confusion today. Sure
there was some stuff there that was definitely suspect,
but the mole isn't required to sabotage every single
challenge. Only ones that she or he can get away
with! If you were really want to know my opinion,
than I'm guessing the mole flew under the radar
this challenge. A lot of people are in the spotlight
right now and the mole was afraid they would make
it obvious if they did anything that drew attention."
Elimination
Week 4
Sunday , September 15, 2002
Connie
Kendall walked back and forth in the hall waiting
for the team to be called down to the courtyard
outside. The nine remaining contestants of AIO Mole
were awaiting the next execution where they would
say good-bye to the fourth player in the game. Mary,
Wooton, and Margaret Faye had gone first. Soon,
one of a possible group of six would be joining
them. Jack Allen, Eugene Meltsner and Monica Stone
had earned themselves all an exemption by being
the only group not to reach Juillac where Cryin'
Bryan Dern had been hiding. Arthur Dent, Robert
Mitchell, Barry Muntz, Jason Whittaker, Richard
Maxwell and Connie herself were all that was left
on the chopping block. Once eliminated, the contestant
would not been able to compete any in the game any
longer and would not be able to claim the grand
prize.
"It's time", came a crew member's
voice, "Dern's waiting for you outside."
The contestants filed out of the hall and out in
the courtyard. It was ten o'clock in the evening,
and the group had been fed a large meal earlier
in the evening. Barry felt the food in his stomach
rumble, as he had an uneasy feeling about what was
going to occur.
Two rows of chairs had been placed in the courtyard.
The first six were to seat the contestants up for
elimination, while the final three would be reserved
for the exempt competitors. Dern stood facing the
group, a large thumbprint monitor displayed behind
him.
"Good evening contestants", Dern said
with a stern look on his face, "Welcome to
the fourth elimination. You all know the drill.
In a moment, I will begin entering your names into
the computer. If a green thumbprint appears, you'll
be here until at least next week. However, if a
red thumbprint appears, you are the mole's
fourth victim. Would anyone like to volunteer to
go first?"
The contestants all looked around at each other
with nervous looks on their faces. Jason paused,
and then reluctantly raised his hand. ‘I would
Mr. Dern."
Dern nodded his head and took a seat at the computer.
"J-a-s-o-n" was soon entered into the
keyboard. The contestants starred at the screen
and held their collective breath. Green. Jason looked
down at the ground and smiled to himself. Dern's
attention turned back to the cast, as he waited
for another hand to be raised. Mitch lifted his
right arm as Connie held on tight to his left.
"R-o-b-e-r-t", appeared on the screen
above. Connie twitched. The screen flashed green
and Mitch sighed with relief. He turned to Connie
and winked.
"I need another volunteer", Dern called
out, "Richard, Barry, Arthur, or Connie?"
Connie looked at Richard, Richard returned her look.
But Barry was the one who decided to raise his hand.
"I'll go Dern."
Dern
smirked and entered Barry's name into the
computer. Barry closed his eyes and breathed in,
then opened his eyes and starred at the screen and
smiled: the color was green. Dern continued smiling
and then winked Arthur. "I'm going to
volunteer you next Dent."
Dent smiled and nodded towards the host. "I
understand it's a formality Mr. Dern, so feel
free to type away."
Connie grew tense. She was one of only a few people
left and didn't want Dern to have to type
her name in. But soon she realized it wasn't
going to be. Arthur Dent's name appeared in
front of a crimson red background.
Dent stood up from his chair. "This is absurd!"
He called out, "I demand a recount!"
Dern looked at Mr. Dent and shook his head. "This
is a fail safe system Arthur. Just because you've
got it in that crazy brain of yours that you're
the mole, doesn't mean it makes it so. You
are the mole's fourth victim. No get out of
here."
Dent stood up and looked up, looking like his pride
had been hurt. "I will not take this from
you Mr. Dern. I will have you fired. Do you hear
me? You can't promise me that I'm the
mole, and then kick me on the street. I tell you
here and now. I quit!"
Bryan Dern smirked. "Resignation accepted.
Now grab your bags and leave!"
And with that, Arthur Dent gathered his belongings
and walked out of the courtyard.
Reactions
Week 4
Monday , September 15, 2002
Richard:
"So Dent wasn't the mole after all. I thought
it would've been a good cover you know? Telling
everyone you're the mole and getting everyone to
think you couldn't possibly be the mole? I'm glad
I voted two ways this last round. Dent was one of
my suspects and since he's gone now, I think I've
figure out who the mole is. Although things change
every day. who knows what'll happen next!"
Eugene:
"Mr. Dent the mole? Well he certainly has a
mentally unstable personality. But as I stated earlier,
there is no way he could possibly have been the
mole. There are many potential candidates, and he
was never one of them. I certainly am glad however
that I was given an exemption. I'm still divided
in who I will vote for in the upcoming exam."
Barry:
"Saved again? Wowa. I'm getting pretty lucky
in this game. Haven't really been given a fair shot,
but I'm glad I'm still around. Every week I think
I'm gonna go, and every week I get off! Isn't this
game great? Now all I gotta do is figure out who
the mole is, and make sure I can make it to the
finals."
Mitch:
"I knew Dent back from our Novacom
days, and while he's a lot different now then he
was, I've known for a while he couldn't be the traitor.
He never did anything intentional to disrupt a challenge,
but he also never really was an asset either. In
any case, I think it's for the best that he's been
voted out of the game. As far as I'm concerned,
everyone's a suspect and one less contestant means
one more x that isn't beside my name."
Jack:
"Poor Arthur Dent. He meant well. I've said
it time and time again. This is a contest that only
one person can win, and I hope Dent can understand
this. Though, and I'm almost afraid to mention it,
I don't think Dent understands much as it is. I
pray for healing for Arthur, and that he finds his
place in this world. He is a good man, and has a
good heart. It's just a shame the rules dictate
one person has to leave every week."
