Stephen was a bold leader in the early Christian church at Jerusalem. He served believers in practical needs and spoke openly about Jesus, even when his message angered powerful religious leaders. False witnesses accused him, and Saul of Tarsus supported the campaign against him. Stephen answered by tracing God's work through Israel's history and declaring that God could not be confined to a building. An enraged crowd dragged him outside the city and stoned him. Stephen died while asking God to forgive his attackers. His courage strengthened other believers, while his death marked a terrible new stage in the persecution that scattered the church beyond Jerusalem.
