Ralph Reems

Ralph Reems is the longtime best friend of Eugene Meltsner's grandfather, Hiram. The two men knew each other for fifty years, making Ralph an important link to the family history Eugene never understood. He tells Eugene that his parents died in Africa and explains how Hiram kept hoping his grandson would return after a painful family argument. Ralph preserves photographs and a piggy bank that Hiram filled with a silver dollar each Christmas for Eugene. Later, he helps settle a dispute over Hiram's old livestock order by explaining his friend's lisp and the wording of the request. Ralph remains a loyal witness to Hiram's character and intentions.
