Abram

Abram, later called Abraham, lived in the twenty-first century B.C. He was the husband of Sarah and the father of Isaac, and God promised him descendants beyond counting. He was a generous and courageous man. When his shepherds brawled with those of his nephew Lot over pastureland, he settled the quarrel by letting Lot take first choice of the land. Lot claimed the lush Jordan valley near Sodom, and Abram kept what was left, along with God's promise. When raiders later carried Lot away, Abram stormed the enemy camp by night with just 318 men and brought everyone home. He also bargained with the Lord to spare Sodom if ten righteous people could be found there. Sarah was ninety when she laughed at the news that she would finally bear him a son.
