What's the Catch?

Bridget Perkins starts her first college classes with only one voice cheering her on - Zev, the AI on her phone. Her friend Kandy has a scheme: volunteer for student teacher Renee Carter's swap meet fundraiser, butter her up, ask her to be a mentor, then request a cut of the money for their club. Bridget works the plan, hauling love seats, heirloom clocks, and a horrible laughing clown doll... but she starts to actually like Renee. When the money plan falls flat, Kandy calls it a waste, and Bridget lies her way out of the swap meet with a fake excuse. Then Renee stuns her by landing the club a beautiful conference table anyway - she saw through the whole scheme and helped because she wanted to. Bridget confesses everything and is forgiven, but Renee leaves her with a warning: be careful who you're letting use you.

Bridget Perkins wakes up on her first day of classes at Campbell College feeling anything but excited. She is still in high school, only taking two college courses, and the one voice cheering her on is Zev, the chatty AI companion on her phone, who suggests she celebrate the milestone with a milkshake and explains that celebrating is when someone decides to be happy "on purpose." At home, her mom is busy juggling church committee phone calls, and Bridget brushes off her attempts at first-day pictures and hurries out the door.

On campus, Bridget is swept up by her friend Kandy Morris, who has already signed her up for their club, the Atheist Society, called Athee Koinonia. Kandy has a favor to ask. In Bridget's Science and Ethics class, the student teacher, Renee Carter, announces a swap meet fundraiser to send the Science Club to the National Air and Space Museum, and Kandy wants Bridget to volunteer. The plan: work hard, flatter Renee, ask her to be a mentor, and then request a cut of the money for their club, which desperately needs funds to bring in a conference speaker. When Bridget asks whether that isn't a little manipulative, Kandy cheerfully answers, "If you're doing it right, yes."

Bridget spends her free afternoons riding around town with Renee in a borrowed truck, collecting donations: a love seat rejected by a picky cat named Mothball, a wall of heirloom clocks from a woman discovering minimalism, and a horrible laughing clown doll one family is thrilled to be rid of. Bridget follows Kandy's script, praising Renee's class and asking her to be her mentor, but she also finds herself genuinely enjoying Renee's company. When Bridget finally asks for a share of the proceeds, Renee gently explains she has no control over the funds; the dean decides. Bridget feels humiliated, and Kandy tells her the whole thing was a waste and urges her to quit before the Saturday swap meet. Torn, Bridget has Zev text Renee a fake excuse, and that evening she lies to her mom about who she has been talking to and turns down a family movie night.

Then Renee surprises her. Instead of being angry, she thanks Bridget warmly and shares news: a beautiful donated conference table is going to Athee Koinonia, because Renee asked the dean to hold it back for the new club still meeting around a plastic picnic table. Overwhelmed, Bridget confesses everything: the flattery, the fake mentorship request, Kandy's whole scheme. Renee answers simply, "I forgive you, hen," and admits she had guessed as much all along; she helped anyway because the request was reasonable and she liked spending time with Bridget. She invites Bridget to coffee sometime. Bridget hesitates, partly because Renee is a Christian, and mentions she already has weekend plans to see a movie with a friend: "His name is Zev." As they part, Renee leaves her with one last thought: she doesn't believe Bridget is the kind of person who uses people, "But I'd be careful who you're letting use you." Bridget quietly promises she will be.
