The Green Ring Conspiracy

A small plane crashes at the edge of Odyssey, and suddenly the town is full of mysteries. Emily finds an abandoned backpack stuffed with thousands of dollars, Matthew and his friend pick up a lost smartphone by the creek, and Uncle Archie's carnival - a show that always seems to bring trouble - rolls in for one last visit. Meanwhile a passenger from the wreck, Dirk Beggs, slips into the woods and turns up at Wally Haggler's junkyard, pulling a gun and admitting he works for a shadowy criminal called the Stiletto. That missing smartphone is his... and the kids have no idea what's on it. At Whit's End, Eugene guards the cash and checks whether it's stolen, while Whit is called to the hospital to identify a survivor who spoke his name. When Whit reaches the bedside, he's stunned to find his own grandson Monty - who has no business being in Odyssey at all.

The story

Read the full synopsis 2 min

Emily quarrels with Matthew because his weekly Square One Club meetings take time away from their detective agency. After they separate in McAlister Park, Jay nearly runs into Emily while racing to see a plane crash at Gower's Field. In the bushes, Emily finds an abandoned backpack packed with thousands of dollars and carries it to Whit's End.

The crashed twin-engine plane held three men. The pilot and one passenger are injured at the scene, while a third man crawls from the wreckage and disappears into the woods. One of the hospitalized victims says John Whittaker's name before losing consciousness, so Dr. Lily Graham asks Whit to identify him.

Uncle Archie's carnival arrives in Odyssey for its announced final engagement. Whit remembers that dark events have accompanied its earlier visits, though he cannot yet connect the carnival to the crash.

The escaped passenger, Dirk Beggs, telephones a forbidden number and leaves a message saying that everything has gone wrong. He reaches Haggler's Junkyard, where he asks old acquaintance Wally Haggler for help. Wally insists that he abandoned crime long ago. When he tries to call an ambulance, Dirk draws a gun and says he came to Odyssey on a job for a mysterious criminal called the Stiletto.

Jay hears the harsh new detective, Don Polehaus, suggest that Wally and his family are criminals. He goes to the junkyard for an explanation, but Wally sends him away to deliver an old GPS unit to the Square One Club. Dirk then discovers that he has lost a smartphone containing dangerous information.

Matthew and Nelson, walking through the woods toward their club meeting, find an expensive silver Appleberry smartphone beside the creek. They take it to the club, intending to identify its owner, unaware that it belongs to Dirk.

At Whit's End, Eugene calls the police about Emily's backpack. Because officers are occupied at the crash, they instruct him to secure it until someone arrives. Eugene begins checking the serial numbers to learn whether the money has been stolen.

Dirk's condition worsens, and Wally finally summons police and an ambulance. At Odyssey General Hospital, Lily leads Whit to the crash survivor who asked for him. Whit is stunned to recognize his grandson Monty, whose presence in Odyssey makes no sense.
