Jack Allen begins Food for the Hungry, a citywide program that will collect and distribute food to people in need. Connie asks Bart Rathbone to let the Electric Palace serve as a collection point. Bart refuses because donations will occupy space without bringing him money, though he reluctantly agrees to display a small poster.
At the same time, Erica Clark learns how many young bicycle riders are injured when they do not wear helmets. Jack challenges her to spread the warning herself. Erica worries that no one will listen to a child, but Jack reminds her not to let anyone look down on her because she is young. She spends three days designing helmet-safety posters and arrives at school early to hang them.
Brenda Perry offers to help Erica. Vice Principal Hunt catches Brenda putting up posters but approves their message. At an assembly later that day, he mistakenly announces that Brenda created the campaign and praises her before the whole school. Brenda accepts the applause without correcting him. Erica is furious that someone else has received credit for her idea and work.
Bart's attitude also changes for the wrong reason. When wealthy factory owner Harry Wainwright sees the Food for the Hungry poster and says businesses should support charities, Bart announces that his store will collect donations. Wainwright promises to send nearly a thousand employees there. Bart sees potential customers, creates many new posters advertising the Electric Palace, and uses the charity to promote his business.
Connie confronts Bart, but he is preparing for a live television interview. On Odyssey Forum, he presents himself as the inspired founder of Food for the Hungry and repeatedly advertises his store. Connie is outraged that Bart is claiming Jack's idea. Erica points to his behavior as proof that Jack should understand her anger toward Brenda.
Jack does understand, but he is not angry. He began the program to feed hungry people, and Bart's self-promotion is bringing in food. Jack does not object to honest recognition, yet praise was never his purpose. Bart and Brenda have received the public reward they wanted, while Jack and Erica can know their efforts are truly helping others.
During the interview, Bart is asked how the donated food will be distributed. He has been so busy chasing publicity that he has never learned the answer. Cornered, he finally admits that Jack created the distribution system and says he could not have succeeded without him.
Brenda then comes to Whit's End and apologizes to Erica. She has already told Hunt the truth and given Erica full credit. Erica accepts the apology and realizes that helmet safety matters more than applause. She invites Brenda to remain her partner because the work is too large to do alone. As the two girls plan their next project, Connie jokingly agrees to clean tables only if she receives credit.
