Jason Whittaker reprograms the Imagination Station to test a bold idea. Because an adventure responds to imagination, he believes Jenny Roberts may be able to see inside it and Zachary Sellars may be able to walk. Jack Allen warns that the experiment could create problems they have not considered, but Jason prefers action to caution and wants to discover what the machine can do.
Connie Kendall asks to reduce her hours at Whit's End because her paternal grandmother, Mildred, has come to stay. Mildred's heart has begun weakening again after earlier surgery. Connie cares for her and accompanies her to repeated hospital tests. Mildred jokes about the doctors but speaks seriously about Connie's father, Bill. She loves him, worries that his selfishness is damaging his second marriage, and longs for him to become a Christian.
Jason invites Jenny to try a new adventure without explaining his hoped-for result. She visits Mary, Martha, and Lazarus and enjoys the experience, but remains blind inside the Station. Rather than feeling disappointed, Jenny says Lazarus helped her understand that her blindness can be part of God's larger plan and used for his glory. Jack sees wisdom in her response, while Jason cannot understand why his changes failed.
At the hospital, Zachary tells Connie that physical therapy is not producing the progress he wants. He does every exercise, yet fears that the adults know he may never leave his wheelchair. Connie hints that Jason has prepared something he will enjoy. Though Jenny's test has failed, Jason allows Zachary to try and enters the adventure beside him.
They arrive in Revolutionary War-era woods. Jason asks Zachary to imagine himself walking, then offers his hand. Frightened but hopeful, Zachary stands. Soon he walks on his own, and when a British soldier discovers them, he runs faster than Jason. For the first time since his accident, Zachary experiences the freedom of using his legs.
While the two continue their adventure, Connie learns that Mildred has suffered a heart attack during what should have been routine tests. Mildred asks Connie to stay, hold her hand, and pray. She accepts that the Lord may take her home but hopes to see Bill first. Using Mildred's prayer book, Connie entrusts the people she loves to God's care and asks for confidence that he is doing better things than they can request for themselves.
Jack ends Zachary's adventure when Eileen Sellars arrives to take her son home. The sudden return to his wheelchair shocks Zachary. When Eileen says he cannot immediately go back, he refuses to leave and begs Jason to explain what walking has meant. No one else seems to understand that he has just received the thing he wants most. "I never want to leave the Imagination Station," he declares.
