For school Spirit Week, Olivia celebrates Opposite Day by doing everything differently from usual. She walks backward, reacts to grades in reverse, and accepts an invitation to a computer club even though technology does not interest her. There she meets Amber, whose best friend Danielle has recently moved away.
Amber eagerly introduces Olivia to computer science and geology. Olivia treats their time together as a chance to practice becoming a different personality, but Priscilla warns that Amber believes she has found a real friend. Olivia admits she is only participating because of Opposite Day, yet Amber hopes Olivia will grow to enjoy her interests just as Danielle once did.
Meanwhile, Barrett becomes absorbed in Club KidChat. He collects more than five hundred online friends, including strangers he knows only through their status updates. Reading and answering so many posts consumes his time, causing him to skip ordinary activities and forget promises to friends nearby.
When Opposite Day ends, Amber still wants to spend time with Olivia. Olivia agrees out of guilt but dislikes rocks, computers, and Amber's planned trip to an insect museum. They try Drama Club together, where Amber wants to reenact a scientific discovery and Olivia wants to invent a melodramatic scene. Both become frustrated, and Olivia finally shouts that she cannot replace Danielle.
Whit helps Olivia think about what friendship means. Shared interests and history can bring people together, but friends do not have to be identical. They must appreciate one another's differences rather than demand that someone become a replacement for another person. Olivia realizes that she has been pretending, while Amber has been trying to make her fit Danielle's place.
Barrett also learns the weakness of shallow connections. One online acquaintance removes him after realizing she mistook him for her dog walker. When Barrett posts that he feels lonely, none of the responses offers the personal care that Matthew and other friends show him at school. He decides to take a break from Club KidChat and invest more time in friends he actually knows.
Olivia finds Amber and apologizes for the hurtful way she spoke. Amber admits that missing Danielle made her expect Olivia to replace her. They accept that they may never be best friends and that their interests remain very different, but both are glad to know each other without pretending to be someone else.
