Dr. William Foster arrives in Odyssey on government business and secretly watches Whit's End. At the same time, Bernard and Tom see Whit driving toward isolated cabins near Trickle Lake at sunrise. Whit does not stop when they wave, and Bernard thinks he sees someone hidden in the back seat.
Later, Connie finds Whit exhausted after another late night with the Imagination Station. He admits that he left the machine running but gives only vague answers about the program he is developing. After asking her to keep everyone away from the machine, he goes home to sleep.
When Bernard and Tom report their encounter at the lake, Connie becomes convinced that Whit is hiding something dangerous. Bernard recognizes what he calls the familiar signs of Whit's mad-scientist behavior: sleeplessness, secrecy, an untested invention, and the arrival of a government agent.
The three friends confront Foster while he sits in a dark car across from Whit's End. He identifies himself as a doctor from the National Institute of Health but refuses to explain whom he is watching or why. Soon afterward, he visits Whit privately and reveals that he knows about the experiments involving the Imagination Station.
At four one morning, Bernard notices Whit's End's silent alarm flashing and calls Connie. The light stops before the police are summoned, suggesting that Whit has entered and disabled it. Connie and Bernard go inside to make sure he has not been hurt.
They find the Imagination Station open and running without anyone visible nearby. When Connie looks inside, it displays scenes from her own life. Bernard sees different scenes from his. The computer identifies the mysterious new program as a memory stimulator, leaving them to wonder why Whit has filled it with their personal histories.
Hidden in the control room, Whit and Foster have watched them enter. After Connie and Bernard leave, Whit admits that he cannot maintain the secret much longer and begins a contingency plan. Connie, Bernard, and Tom meanwhile decide that Whit may be experimenting on himself and plan an intervention before he can be injured.
The following night, the three sneak into Whit's End through a tunnel and the blind spots in its security cameras. They find the Imagination Station sealed and active. Before Connie can stop it, Whit appears and urgently warns her not to touch the controls.
Tom notices that Whit cannot be inside the machine because he is standing before them. Whit refuses to identify the person undergoing the experiment and orders his friends to leave, insisting that a disruption could be dangerous. At that moment, the program shuts down from inside.
Foster takes Connie, Bernard, and Tom into the control room while Whit helps the machine's occupants. Though Whit blocks the camera's view, the listeners recognize familiar voices. Then the person emerges, and Connie sees the impossible answer to every strange clue: Eugene has returned to Odyssey.
