Saul
Saul of Tarsus is a figure from the days of the early church, encountered by Odyssey kids who travel to ancient Jerusalem through the Imagination Station at Whit's End. Fierce, cunning, and utterly ruthless, he is the church's most dangerous enemy, devoting himself to hunting down the followers of Jesus. He pays Rodney Rathbone fifty pieces of silver to speak lies against the bold believer Stephen, whose stoning he helps bring about, and when young Matthew Parker shouts a warning about him, Saul shoves the boy down a well. His persecution drives believers such as Rhoda and her family to flee Jerusalem, scattering across the land, and his zeal carries him toward Damascus with plans to arrest still more of them. To time-traveling visitors, he is a genuine menace - proof that the church's earliest days are anything but safe.
