Juan Reyes
Juan Reyes is the director of a halfway house for former prisoners near Odyssey, where he offers outcasts the same patient hope that was once shown to him. He is a changed man shaped by a hard childhood. As a boy he was cruel, and he repaid the kindness of Esperanza - a girl who kept sharing her lunch with him - with thrown stones, stolen towels, and mockery. Esperanza died in a fall while trying to rescue his shoe from a branch over a ravine. At her funeral, her friend Lucia forgave him and gave him Esperanza's treasured shell necklace. That necklace now sits on his desk, a quiet reminder that kindness is never wasted.
