Joseph Calhoun

Joseph Calhoun is a brain surgeon living in Odyssey. As a boy in Kwanzulu, in East Africa, he escaped rebel raiders who burned villages and turned captured boys into child soldiers. He fled through the wilderness with his friend Omer and a girl named Amina, surviving hunger and pursuit until he reached a refugee camp and found his mother and little sister. That journey taught him that hope can be lost and then come back, a lesson he shares gently with discouraged young people. Kind, humble, and steady in his faith, he answers emergencies at the hospital even when they upend his family's plans. He is married to Kayla, a television weather forecaster, and is father to two sons: Cooper, a star quarterback, and Trey, the family's tireless behind-the-scenes helper.
