Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar was the emperor of Rome, a figure from the distant past who is long dead by the time Odyssey's stories are told. He appears when the people of Whit's End look back into ancient history. In one such glimpse of Rome, he orders the creation of a brand-new calendar, complete with leap years, a reform remembered every New Year's Eve. His manner is that of a ruler used to being obeyed: he commands, and the change is made. He has no ties to the townspeople themselves - he belongs to the ancient world they visit through storytelling and imagination, with Bernard Walton among those who recount his deeds.
