Captain Danforth
Captain Danforth is an officer in the United States Army at Camp Gordon during the Great War. There he encounters Alvin York, a drafted Tennessee mountaineer whose church opposes killing and whose plea as a conscientious objector the army rejected. Danforth doubted the quiet recruit at first. Then York stunned him on the rifle range by putting two shots nearly through the same hole. Won over, the captain takes York's struggle of conscience seriously rather than dismissing it. He opens the Scriptures himself to argue that a man can fight to protect the innocent without hating his enemy. His words leave York torn between turning the other cheek and standing watch over his people, and they weigh heavily as York seeks his answer in prayer.
