The Benefit of the Doubt

Novacom is finished - its leaders are headed for trial, thousands are losing their jobs, and suddenly everyone who ever worked there is treated like a criminal. Colby Cabrera gets the worst of it when Rodney Rathbone calls his father a crook, knocks him flat, and waves around a purchase order that seems to tie Steven Cabrera to the infamous NovaBox. Even Connie piles on, scoffing at a former employee on TV without realizing that Colby's dad has said the very same words. His doubts growing, Colby hides a walkie-talkie in his father's office to eavesdrop on a secret meeting of former Novacom workers... but the meeting isn't a conspiracy at all. Steven admits he saw warning signs and looked away to keep his dream job, and now he's gathered his old coworkers to tell the truth, whatever it costs. Connie apologizes, Colby tells his dad he's proud of him, and Odyssey's honest ex-Novacom families get a fresh start at Whit's End.

The story

Novacom announces that it will dismiss sixty-five percent of its employees as its ratings collapse and many leaders face trial. Connie wishes the entire company would leave Odyssey, but Whit reminds her that most ordinary workers apparently knew nothing about the secret plan. He condemns the corrupt leaders without wanting innocent families to suffer for crimes they did not commit.

Connie is also trying to help Mitch find a local job so that he will not join the FBI and move to Virginia. She circles positions ranging from flight attendant to computer programmer, but Mitch wants meaningful work with people. Although nothing in the newspaper excites him as much as the FBI, he agrees to explore the possibilities before deciding.

Colby Cabrera faces ridicule because his father, Steven, worked for Novacom. Rodney Rathbone calls him the son of a crook and claims to possess proof that Steven knew about the mind-control scheme. Alex defends his friend, but Colby loses his temper and insults Rodney. Rodney answers with a single punch that leaves Colby gasping on the ground.

Steven comforts his son and explains that adults have been attacking him with words even if no one has hit him. Colby does not need to answer every insult, because the trust of family and true friends matters more than the accusations of strangers. Alex assures the Cabreras that he still believes them.

At Whit’s End, Connie mocks a former Novacom employee who says on television that she knew nothing about the conspiracy. Colby overhears Connie arguing that the company’s workers must at least have suspected something and chosen to look away. Because his father has made the same public denial, Colby leaves in pain. Whit explains the connection, and Connie realizes that her careless judgment has wounded someone she knows.

Mitch encounters the same suspicion during job interviews. Once employers learn that he worked at Novacom, they no longer care about the rest of his résumé. Some distrust him for being associated with the company; others consider him disloyal because he exposed it. Connie is outraged that innocent people treat Mitch as guilty, until Whit points out that she has done the same thing to former Novacom workers she does not personally know.

Rodney shows Colby a purchase order for fifty transistors approved with Steven’s signature. Alex observes that an electronics company could have many innocent reasons to buy such parts, but Rodney connects the order directly to the NovaBox. The paper proves only that Steven authorized a purchase, yet Colby begins wondering whether his father has told the whole truth.

When several former Novacom employees gather at the Cabrera home for a private meeting, Colby’s fear deepens. He hides a walkie-talkie in Steven’s office so he and Alex can listen from upstairs. Alex objects that spying on a father who has never lied to or abandoned Colby is wrong. While Colby answers the door, Alex switches off the receiver.

The visitor is Connie, who sincerely apologizes for judging Steven and his coworkers as a group. She has not met Steven, but Whit trusts him and Colby knows his character as a father. Her apology helps Colby recognize that he has begun accepting Rodney’s suspicions over the evidence of his own life.

Steven discovers the hidden radio and confronts Colby. He admits that Colby could have learned the truth simply by asking. Steven did not know Novacom intended to control minds, but he did see questionable invoices, knew the company had skipped required testing, and knew it had falsified results reported to the government. He looked away and made excuses because the position was his dream job. He is ashamed of that choice.

The meeting is not a new conspiracy. Steven has invited former colleagues because he has decided to reveal everything he knows and wants them to do the same. Speaking out may cost some of them their jobs and friendships, but he is asking them to act rightly and trust him. Colby promises to pray for the meeting and tells his father that he is proud of him, though Steven reminds him that spying will still have consequences.

Whit offers Steven temporary bookkeeping work at the Connellsville Whit’s End and gives former Novacom employees the first chance at several other openings. Mitch solves his own employment problem by establishing an online computer-consulting business from his apartment. Its success is not guaranteed, so his long-term decision remains open, but for now he can work for himself in Odyssey without being judged for the honest stand he took.
