O.T. Action News: Battle at the Kishon

After twenty years under cruel General Sisera and his nine hundred iron chariots, Israel is ready to fight back - and the reporters of OT Action News are on the scene to cover it all. The prophet Deborah summons Barak with a command from God: gather ten thousand men on Mount Tabor and face the mighty Canaanite army at the Kishon River. But Barak's men have no training and few weapons, and the flat plain below is perfect ground for chariots. When Deborah orders the charge anyway, a sudden storm turns the battlefield to mud, panics the horses, and floods the river until Sisera's greatest weapon becomes a trap. The general flees on foot to the tent of Jael - a woman who knows all about iron pegs and a sturdy hammer... By the time Barak catches up, Deborah's strange prophecy has come true: the honor of victory goes to a woman, and Israel is finally free.

Kids' Radio sends Mandy Straussberg to ancient Israel for an episode of *Good Housekeeping Throughout History*. She visits Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, at her tent near the Oakwood at the Twin Tents of Wandering. Jael explains that strong fabric, iron pegs, a solid hammer, and suitable ground are the secrets of a dependable home. Her husband keeps friendly relations with both Israelites and Canaanites, though Jael herself dislikes General Sisera and sympathizes with the Israelites he oppresses.

The domestic program is interrupted by an OT Action News bulletin. After twenty years of Canaanite oppression under King Jabin, Israel is preparing to rebel. Reporter Alex Jefferson stands near the palm tree where Deborah serves as a prophet and judge. He listens as she summons Barak and delivers God's command: Barak must gather ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. God will draw Sisera's army and chariots to the Kishon River and give Israel victory.

Barak agrees to lead only if Deborah accompanies him. She accepts but warns that his choice will cost him the honor of capturing Sisera. The final victory over the general will come through a woman. Alex asks whether Deborah is that woman, but she gives no further explanation before departing to assemble the tribes.

In the studio, Whit provides the historical background. Since Joshua's death, foreign powers have oppressed Israel several times. The Canaanites are not holding every Israelite as a slave, but Sisera's forces terrorize villages, block trade, steal weapons, and use their superior chariots to keep the people helpless. Israel had enjoyed eighty years of peace before doing evil and suffering the consequences of turning away from God.

Reporter Nathaniel Graham visits Sisera's headquarters. The general boasts of hundreds of thousands of foot soldiers, thousands of horsemen, and nine hundred iron chariots equipped to tear through troops on foot. When news arrives that the Israelites have gathered on Mount Tabor, he orders the full force toward the plains beside the Kishon River. The flat land gives his chariots an enormous advantage.

From the mountain, Barak admits that his ten thousand men lack military training and have few weapons. Their high position keeps Sisera's chariots from reaching them, and Barak considers remaining there his safest strategy. Deborah instead orders him to march down and meet the enemy. God has already gone ahead of them and placed Sisera's army in their hands. Trusting her message, Barak leads the Israelites off the mountain.

As they descend, a sudden wall of rain strikes the Canaanites. Thunder terrifies their horses, water keeps their archers from aiming, and the flat battlefield turns to mud beneath the heavy wheels. The chariots crash into one another while soldiers slip in the confusion. The Kishon River rises rapidly and sweeps away men, horses, and machines attempting to cross it. The very ground Sisera selected for his greatest weapon becomes a trap.

Nathaniel reports first from a tree and then from beneath an overturned chariot as the untrained Israelites rout the powerful army. Barak's soldiers pursue the survivors toward their camp. General Sisera abandons his chariot and flees north on foot, with Barak close behind. The machine that gave him pride and confidence can no longer save him.

OT Action News temporarily returns to regular programming, placing Mandy and Jael back at the center of events. The exhausted Sisera arrives at Heber's tent seeking sanctuary. By the customs of the land, a host is expected to protect a guest, and Heber's friendly relations with the Canaanites make the location appear safe.

Jael welcomes Sisera inside. When he asks for water, she gives him milk, covers him with pillows, and encourages him to sleep. Sisera orders her to deny that anyone is there if pursuers arrive. Once he is asleep, Jael sends Mandy outside and retrieves the sturdy hammer and tent pegs she demonstrated earlier.

Barak reaches the area but cannot simply search every tent because sanctuary is considered sacred. Jael emerges and promises to show him the man he seeks. Mandy, who has witnessed what happened, says only that Jael has a powerful swing and leaves the unpleasant details for families to read together.

Barak enters the tent and soon announces that Sisera is dead at Jael's hand. Deborah's prophecy has been fulfilled: a woman, but not Deborah herself, receives the honor of bringing down the general. Whit explains that Jael may have acted from loyalty to Israel or from some private motive against Sisera; her precise reason remains unknown. Whatever she understood about her part, her action completes the defeat God promised, and Israel is freed from the army that had seemed impossible to overcome.
