Checkmate

The Bones have kidnapped a spy - and it's Lucy! When Jason sends his friends out to gather evidence against the gang, Rodney lures Lucy to the Bones' secret cave, where Jellyfish threatens to leave her lost in the dark woods. Meanwhile, Eugene rides the Imagination Station back to the 1850s and uncovers a strange mineral in the tunnel beneath Whit's End... just as an attacker smashes up the building and the power goes out. Richard Maxwell zaps the Bones with a stunner and rescues Lucy, but the damage is done. Glossman uses the attack as an excuse to shut down Whit's End completely, clearing the way for Blackgaard to declare "Check and mate" - and begin digging for the mineral himself.

The story

Regis Blackgaard is furious that Glossman calls Whit's End's closure a total victory. Employees may still enter, which prevents Blackgaard from secretly excavating the tunnel. He orders Glossman to create a complete quarantine extending one hundred yards around the property and warns him not to fail again.

Jason reorganizes the Israelites into a network that uses each member's strengths and reduces the chance of another beating like Butch's. Their acts of goodness will continue, but the Bones have learned to sabotage them, so Jason also wants evidence and a way to make their opponents nervous. Billy and Sam will enter the Bones' old hideout while the gang bowls in a league Jellyfish has arranged. Lucy will monitor the bowling alley and warn them if the Bones leave.

Eugene returns to the Imagination Station to search Whit's End's history for the reason Glossman and Professor Bovril are so interested in the tunnel. He now understands prayer differently and sincerely asks Connie to pray for him. His search carries him back to the 1850s, where he observes Reverend Andrew treating William Ross's injured arm with a salve made from herbs, molds, fungus, and a mineral found in the tunnel. The mineral seems useless alone but becomes valuable when mixed with other substances.

At the bowling alley, Rodney and Rusty spot Lucy and recognize her as a spy. Defying Jellyfish's instructions, Rodney claims he is tired of current events and offers her secret information. Lucy follows him to the Bones' new cave. Meanwhile, Billy and Sam find no useful evidence in the old hideout, so they carry out Jason's second plan: cleaning the filthy place to show the Bones that the Israelites have found it.

Back at Whit's End, an attacker suddenly delivers a threatening message to the Israelites and violently damages the building. Jason pulls Connie down to protect her, but he is cut and the power fails. The blackout stops the Imagination Station just as Eugene learns more about the mineral's name and properties. With no proof identifying the attackers, the police can do little. Jason realizes his offensive plan has exposed Whit's End to a counterattack, and then discovers that Lucy has not returned.

At the new cave, Rodney presents Lucy to an enraged Jellyfish. Rodney believes frightening her will make her reveal the Israelites' plans. Jellyfish threatens to leave Lucy lost in the dark woods unless she talks, but Richard Maxwell has been watching the cave. He disables Rusty, Rodney, and Jellyfish with an electrical stunner and rescues her. Richard reveals that Jellyfish's real name is Myron and reminds him, “I never forget.”

The assault gives Glossman the excuse Blackgaard needs. Claiming the mineral is extremely toxic and the property attracts dangerous vandalism, he arrives with authority from several government departments and sheriff's officers. He orders everyone out of Whit's End and closes the surrounding area for one hundred yards. Although his own tests show the mineral is inert, Eugene is forced to leave the damaged Imagination Station before recovering the lost clue.

Glossman reports that the grounds are deserted and can be reached through a secluded maintenance road. Blackgaard finally pronounces, “Check and mate.” He orders Professor Bovril to begin the excavation and declares Whit's End his.
